The latest standings from Great British Racing have Loughnane on 143 winners from 712 rides, compared with Murphy’s 123 victories from 625, with the championship concluding on Saturday 17th October.

Already widely referred to as the champion jockey-elect, Loughnane is now closing in on the biggest domestic individual honour of his career following a season that has combined relentless consistency with some of the most significant victories on the British racing calendar.

Loughnane closes in on first Champion Jockey title

The Flat Jockeys’ Championship began at Newmarket on Saturday 2nd May and runs until British Champions Day at Ascot Racecourse on Saturday 17th October, with the rider recording the most victories during that period crowned champion.

Loughnane currently holds a 20-winner advantage over five-time champion Murphy, who lifted the title in 2019, 2020, 2021, 2024 and 2025. His lead has increased significantly during the closing stages of the campaign, having stood at 12 victories as recently as 18th September.

The scale of his achievement is underlined by the fact that Murphy won last year’s championship with 143 victories. Loughnane has already matched that total before October has even begun, giving him the opportunity to continue adding to his tally before the championship reaches its conclusion at Ascot.

It would represent another significant step in a career that has progressed at remarkable speed since Loughnane made his professional debut as a 16-year-old in 2022.

Bow Echo delivers Loughnane’s breakthrough season

While Loughnane’s championship challenge has been built on producing winners throughout the summer, his partnership with Bow Echo has provided many of the defining moments of his season.

The George Boughey-trained colt handed Loughnane his first British Classic victory in the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket in May, powering clear to defeat Gstaad by two and three-quarter lengths. At just 20 years old, Loughnane became the youngest jockey to win the race since Donnacha O’Brien aboard Saxon Warrior in 2018.

Bow Echo and Loughnane then arrived at Royal Ascot, where they maintained their unbeaten record with victory over Gstaad in the St James’s Palace Stakes. Their remarkable campaign continued at Goodwood when Bow Echo won the Sussex Stakes, becoming the first horse since Frankel in 2011 to complete the 2,000 Guineas, St James’s Palace Stakes and Sussex Stakes treble in the same season.

Bow Echo was subsequently retired after suffering a setback in August, bringing an unbeaten six-race career to an early conclusion, but the victories he shared with Loughnane had already helped transform the jockey’s season.

Loughnane has continued to deliver at the highest level since then. He partnered Comanche Brave to Group 1 success in the Flying Five Stakes at the Curragh in September, having also ridden the sprinter to victory in the July Cup at Newmarket.

From Champion Apprentice to Champion Jockey

Loughnane’s rise through British racing has taken place in little more than four years.

The son of trainer Mark Loughnane rode his first winner at Wolverhampton in November 2022 before quickly emerging as one of the standout young riders in the country. He was crowned Champion Apprentice in 2023, only a year after making his debut, and continued to establish himself on some of racing’s biggest stages.

His first Group 1 success came aboard Rebel’s Romance in Germany in August 2025 before he went on to finish the calendar year with 222 British winners, breaking Kieren Fallon’s previous 21st-century record of 221. That achievement secured Loughnane the separate Annual Flat Jockeys’ Championship, which is decided by winners across the full calendar year.

The traditional Champion Jockey title, however, remained outstanding.

That is the prize he is now set to secure in 2026, having combined the volume of winners that characterised his breakthrough seasons with major victories at Newmarket, Royal Ascot, Goodwood and beyond.

Should Loughnane complete the championship victory as expected, he would also become Britain’s youngest Flat Champion Jockey since Frank Wootton in 1909.

The championship will officially reach its conclusion at Ascot Racecourse on Saturday 17th October as the leading names in the sport gather for British Champions Day.
