Cheltenham Racing Returns This Month as The Showcase Opens 2026/27 Season
Racing returns to Cheltenham Racecourse later this month, with The William Hill Showcase bringing the curtain up on the 2026/27 season at the Home of Jump Racing.
Taking place across Friday 23 and Saturday 24 October, The Showcase will be the first racing staged at Cheltenham since last season and begins a programme that will ultimately build towards the Cheltenham Festival in March. Across two competitive cards, established names will return to Prestbury Park while emerging hurdlers and chasers get an early opportunity to strengthen their credentials for the campaign ahead.
Cheltenham is Back for a New Jumps Season
There are few more recognisable signs that the National Hunt season is beginning to gather momentum than racing returning to Cheltenham, and The Showcase provides the first chance of the campaign to assess horses around one of the sport’s most demanding courses.
Friday’s seven-race card gets underway at 1:15pm and includes a mixture of hurdles and steeplechases. Among the highlights is the Grade 2 Sharp Novices’ Hurdle over approximately two miles, alongside races for novice chasers and several competitive handicaps. The final race is scheduled for 4:45pm.
Saturday follows with another seven races from 1:10pm, including novice contests over hurdles and fences, a three-mile handicap hurdle and a Class 2 handicap chase over approximately three miles and one furlong. The afternoon concludes with a National Hunt Flat Race at 4:40pm.
With the major spring meetings still several months away, October is about discovering which horses could develop as the season progresses. Performances at Cheltenham can provide an early indication of how inexperienced horses handle the track’s undulations, testing finish and demanding fences before the quality of the competition increases later in the campaign.
The First Step on the Road Towards the Cheltenham Festival
The Showcase occupies an important position in Cheltenham’s calendar because it begins a sequence of meetings that gradually increases in significance as the season develops.
Once October’s meeting has concluded, the racecourse returns with The November Meeting from 13 to 15 November, followed by The Christmas Meeting on 11 and 12 December. New Year’s Day Racing follows on 1 January before Festival Trials Day takes place on 30 January. The Cheltenham Festival itself is scheduled for Tuesday 16 to Friday 19 March 2027.
Not every horse competing at The Showcase will ultimately return for the Festival, but the meeting provides trainers with an early opportunity to give promising hurdlers and chasers experience around Cheltenham. For racing followers, it also provides the first real opportunity of the new Cheltenham season to begin identifying horses whose performances may become increasingly significant over the months ahead.
The meeting therefore represents more than simply the reopening fixture at Prestbury Park. It marks the point at which Cheltenham once again becomes a regular feature of the jumps calendar, with each subsequent meeting adding another layer to the story of the season.
A Full Cheltenham Season Lies Ahead
The return of Cheltenham comes at a significant point in the wider racing calendar, with October providing the crossover between the conclusion of many of the Flat season’s major contests and the increasing prominence of National Hunt racing.
The Showcase begins a Cheltenham programme that stretches through the autumn, winter and spring, culminating in four days of Festival action in March before racing continues with The April Meeting and Hunter Chase Evening later in the campaign.
For many of jump racing’s leading trainers, jockeys and owners, the coming months will increasingly revolve around Cheltenham. The first opportunity to compete there arrives this October.
