Desert Castle and Darkness Falls Headline Newmarket Dewhurst Showdown
Some of the most exciting two-year-old horses in European racing will take centre stage at Newmarket this weekend as the 2026 Dubai Future Champions Festival gets underway on Friday 9th October, with Saturday’s Group 1 Darley Dewhurst Stakes promising to be one of the highlights of the autumn Flat racing season.
The prestigious two-day meeting at the Rowley Mile features nine Group races, including two Group 1 contests, as leading trainers look to establish their strongest prospects for next season’s Classics. With £500,000 in prize money available in both the Dewhurst Stakes and the Fillies’ Mile, there is plenty at stake for some of the sport’s most promising young horses.
Desert Castle Faces Toughest Test Yet in Dewhurst Stakes
Charlie Appleby’s unbeaten Desert Castle heads into Saturday’s Darley Dewhurst Stakes as one of the leading contenders for the 2027 2,000 Guineas, having impressed in both of his appearances so far this season.
The Godolphin-owned colt, a son of Frankel, made a winning debut in August before producing an even more impressive performance in the Group 2 Champagne Stakes at Doncaster in September. Desert Castle pulled three lengths clear of his rivals over seven furlongs, strengthening his position among the most highly regarded juveniles in training.
William Buick takes over from Billy Loughnane aboard Desert Castle on Saturday, with Appleby seeking his fourth Dewhurst victory since 2019. However, the Newmarket trainer faces significant competition from Aidan O’Brien, whose Ballydoyle operation will be represented by two talented colts.
Darkness Falls appears the biggest threat following his impressive Group 1 victory in the Golden Fleece Stakes at Leopardstown during September’s Irish Champions Festival. The son of Camelot won by more than four lengths over nine furlongs and arrives at Newmarket with Ryan Moore booked to ride.
Saturday’s seven-furlong contest presents a different challenge for Darkness Falls, who has yet to race over a distance shorter than a mile. Nevertheless, his existing Group 1 success makes him a serious contender against Desert Castle, who is stepping up to the highest level for the first time.
Great Barrier Reef Among Five Confirmed Dewhurst Runners
O’Brien also saddles Great Barrier Reef, who enjoyed an excellent start to his career when winning his first three races, including the Group 2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot in June.
The colt subsequently finished second on his return to action following a break and will now attempt seven furlongs for the first time under Wayne Lordan. His previous performances suggest he has the ability to compete at this level, although the additional distance will provide a fresh examination of his credentials.
Appleby’s second runner, Jassas, will be partnered by newly crowned Champion Jockey Billy Loughnane. The colt has won two of his three starts, including his most recent appearance at Haydock, and now faces a substantial rise in class against more established Group-race performers.
Andrew Balding completes the field with Gentle Hurricane, ridden by James Doyle. The colt finished runner-up in the Group 3 Acomb Stakes at York before taking fourth behind Desert Castle in the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster.
Balding has enjoyed considerable success in the Dewhurst in recent seasons, winning with Chaldean in 2022 and Gewan in 2025. His latest representative will need to improve on his Doncaster performance, but the trainer’s record in the contest provides additional interest.
The Darley Dewhurst Stakes is scheduled for 3pm on Saturday 10th October, with £283,550 awaiting the winner.
Why the Dewhurst Stakes Matters for the 2027 Classics
The Dewhurst has long been regarded as one of Europe’s most important races for two-year-olds, frequently providing an early indication of which horses could become leading contenders for the following season’s major prizes.
Its list of previous winners includes some outstanding performers, with Frankel winning in 2010 before his unforgettable victory in the 2011 2,000 Guineas. More recently, Chaldean completed the Dewhurst and 2,000 Guineas double in successive seasons, while City Of Troy won the 2023 Dewhurst before establishing himself among Europe’s leading three-year-olds the following year.
Desert Castle’s position towards the head of the betting for next year’s 2,000 Guineas adds particular significance to Saturday’s race. Meanwhile, Darkness Falls has already attracted considerable attention as a potential Derby contender, making the meeting between the two colts an important examination of their respective abilities.
The result will not determine what happens next spring, but it should provide valuable evidence for connections planning their horses’ three-year-old campaigns.
Fillies’ Mile and Cesarewitch Add to Newmarket’s Weekend
The Dewhurst is not the only major race taking place across the Dubai Future Champions Festival, with Friday’s Group 1 bet365 Fillies’ Mile providing another opportunity to assess potential Classic contenders.
Charlie Appleby’s unbeaten Musical Times is among the leading names in the eight-runner field, having won the Group 2 May Hill Stakes at Doncaster. She faces opposition including Rogue Passion, who arrives following a Group 2 victory at Longchamp, and Andrew Balding’s unbeaten Forbidden Fire, who steps up to a mile after winning the Listed Flying Scotsman Stakes.
Saturday’s programme also features the Group 3 Autumn Stakes and Zetland Stakes, providing further opportunities for promising juveniles to advertise their potential over longer distances.
There is also the historic Club Godolphin Cesarewitch Handicap, run over approximately two miles and two furlongs. Last year’s winner Beylerbeyi returns for Ian Williams and Billy Loughnane, attempting to become the first horse to win the famous staying contest in consecutive years.
With several of Britain’s and Ireland’s leading trainers represented across both days, the meeting promises to provide plenty of important talking points before the British Flat racing season draws towards its conclusion.
