Spaun’s Late Birdie Blitz Secures Victory at Wentworth

Spaun began the final round two shots behind overnight leaders Manuel Elvira and Filippo Celli, with the American facing competition from several established names as the tournament entered its final day.

The 36-year-old made his move on the back nine, producing a remarkable run of birdies to move clear of the chasing pack. His late charge began with an approach to within three feet of the hole at the par-three 14th, before he converted birdie putts at the 15th and 16th.

A further birdie at the par-five 18th completed a five-under-par round of 67, leaving Spaun as the clubhouse leader on 17-under-par. His performance ultimately proved enough to secure the title on his first appearance at Wentworth.

Manuel Elvira’s Late Collapse Hands Spaun the Title

While Spaun produced an impressive finish, the closing stages also brought disappointment for Spain’s Manuel Elvira, who had entered the final round as joint leader alongside Filippo Celli.

Elvira remained firmly in contention throughout Sunday and produced an eagle at the par-five 17th to give himself a chance of claiming the title on the final hole.

The Spaniard needed a birdie at the 18th to win outright, with a par enough to force a play-off against Spaun. However, an inaccurate lay-up found a fairway bunker, and further mistakes resulted in a double bogey.

Elvira consequently finished on 15-under-par, two shots behind Spaun, missing out on what would have been his maiden DP World Tour title.

Rory McIlroy and Aaron Rai Among Four Players Tied for Second

Rory McIlroy was among the players who challenged Spaun during the final round, with the Northern Irishman beginning Sunday just two shots behind the overnight leaders.

McIlroy produced a closing round of 68 to finish on 15-under-par, but several missed birdie opportunities prevented him from putting greater pressure on the eventual champion. Despite falling short of the title, his performance strengthened his position in the season-long Race to Dubai standings.
