Royal Ascot Day Two Preview: Daryz Meets Ombudsman in Feature Race
Day two of Royal Ascot brings a packed card full of big fields, rising stars and a headline clash that could define the week, as Arc winner Daryz takes on defending champion Ombudsman in a mouthwatering renewal of the Prince of Wales’s Stakes.
2.30 Queen Mary Stakes
A 28-runner juvenile sprint to get the Group action underway, and it has plenty of depth and intrigue.
Senorita Bonita and Wild Blossom set the standard on what they have achieved so far, but they arrive via very different routes. Senorita Bonita made a big impression on debut at Nottingham, coming from well off the pace to get up late after looking a bit green early on. That strong finishing effort suggested a filly with real ability and more to come with experience.
Wild Blossom could hardly have been more dominant when winning by ten lengths at Carlisle. It was a powerful front-running display and Karl Burke knows exactly what it takes to win this race, which only strengthens her claims in a deep field.
There is international interest as well with US challenger Ruiva adding another layer of intrigue, while Aidan O’Brien’s Victorious is unbeaten in two starts and arrives with Ryan Moore booked. That combination alone ensures she commands respect.
3.05 Queen’s Vase
A proper stamina test for the next generation, with staying power likely to be at a premium.
Limestone comes into this in excellent form after three straight wins for Joseph O’Brien and looks like a colt still improving with every run. This step up in trip should suit on pedigree and running style.
Galiyan is another strong contender with consistency on his side, while Asakir, running in the Aga Khan colours, is the definition of a reliable type. He has not finished outside the top three in his career so far and continues to progress with experience, which is exactly what you want in a race like this.
3.40 Duke of Cambridge Stakes
Blue Bolt leads the way for Andrew Balding and Juddmonte in a typically competitive Group 2 for fillies and mares.
She has been remarkably consistent and sets the form standard, but will need to be at her very best to fend off a field full of improving rivals. Friendly Soul looks the main danger if she has come through her setback at Haydock in good order, as she has shown enough ability to suggest she could be a serious factor if fully ready.
4.20 Prince of Wales’s Stakes
The feature race of the day is a blockbuster clash between two elite middle-distance performers, as Arc winner Daryz takes on last year’s hero Ombudsman.
Daryz arrives with a top-class profile, having landed the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe last season when beating Minnie Hauk. He has taken another step forward this year, showing more tactical speed than previously and adding two further Group 1 wins to his record. If he handles the quicker Ascot ground, he looks a very serious force.
Ombudsman is no stranger to this stage either. A three-time Group 1 winner, he made a strong return when seeing off Gethin in the Brigadier Gerard Stakes despite conceding weight. That was a performance full of substance and he brings proven Ascot form into a race that will demand every ounce of his class.
Almaqam adds further depth after landing the Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh, breaking his Group 1 duck in the process. He will need a strong early position under Kieran Shoemark but is clearly progressing.
Minnie Hauk is the wildcard. A three-time Oaks winner, she has the talent to get involved but arrives with some inconsistency in her profile. If things fall right, she is more than capable of making her presence felt in a red-hot renewal.
5.00 Royal Hunt Cup
A 30-runner cavalry charge and one of the most unpredictable handicaps of the week.
Indalo sits near the head of the market after a solid second at Newbury behind Classic. That form looks strong and a 2lb rise does not appear harsh, especially given Roger Varian’s yard is operating at a high strike rate and has a strong Royal Ascot record.
Classic himself arrives with a solid profile after that Newbury win and looks well equipped for a race like this if things go smoothly in transit.
La Botte is another who could easily be well treated. He was a notably unlucky runner-up in last year’s Britannia and now runs off a 2lb lower mark. He has been competing in stronger company since and this return to a big-field handicap could be exactly what he needs.
Jagged Edge, Erzindjan and Shout all add further depth in a race where traffic, timing and luck will likely play a major role.
5.35 Kensington Palace Stakes
A fiercely competitive fillies’ handicap with plenty of potential improvers.
Stateira, a new acquisition for Wathnan Racing, tops the field on rating but this is a deep contest and she will need to settle quickly into her new surroundings. Alobayyah is expected to be popular for William Haggas after a series of solid efforts and looks well capable of running a big race in this sort of company.
6.10 Windsor Castle Stakes
The day closes with another fast and furious juvenile sprint, where Ballydoyle’s Sergei Diaghilev leads a typically strong challenge.
These races are often decided by raw speed and the ability to handle pressure in a large field. With so many lightly raced two-year-olds involved, expect plenty of late drama as they charge to the line in front of a packed Ascot crowd.
