Shergar Cup 2026: Ryan Moore and Saffie Osbourne headline Great Britain & Ireland Team
Before the start of this weekend’s Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup at Ascot, the Great Britain and Ireland team has been strengthened by the confirmation that both Ryan Moore and Dylan Browne McMonagle will take part in the annual international jockeys’ competition.
Moore is set to make his first Shergar Cup appearance since 2006, joining team captain Saffie Osborne and one of the sport’s standout young riders, Browne McMonagle, in the home side.
The 23-year-old heads to Ascot in exceptional form after a memorable Glorious Goodwood, where he partnered four winners. Among those victories were Group race successes aboard Enceladus in the Gordon Stakes and Goodie Two Shoes in the Lillie Langtry Stakes. His impressive campaign has also included Classic triumphs in both the English Oaks with Thundering On and the Irish Oaks aboard Johanna Walsh.
Moore also arrives in top form after riding five winners during Glorious Goodwood. The multiple champion jockey had originally been due to compete in the 2016 Shergar Cup before opting to take a short break from racing, making this his first appearance in the unique team event for two decades.
Ascot’s Head of Corporate and Industry Affairs, Will Aitkenhead, welcomed the additions to the home side.
“It’s fantastic to have Ryan and Dylan in the Great Britain and Ireland team. It’s helpful that the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh has been moved to Sunday, and it’s a good opportunity for us to get these top riders in.
“They both had good Royal Ascots, and they’re both enjoying very good seasons, and it bolsters the strength of that team, which is something we’ve been keen to do.”
The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup features four teams competing across six races, with points awarded throughout the card to determine the overall champions. Alongside Great Britain and Ireland, the competition also features Team Europe, the Hong Kong Jockey Club and the Rest of the World.
Aitkenhead believes the event continues to provide valuable opportunities for riders from around the globe.
“What the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup has always done is connect jockeys to new trainers and owners they might not normally ride for. There are lots of opportunities that can come from it, so it’s great that younger international riders can throw their names into the mix.
“They all get five rides, and they should all get a level book of chances with the way the competition is structured. It’s different, but it’s always a fun day between Goodwood and York.”
