What’s next for Royal Ascot’s big winners?
Royal Ascot could have been a very different spectacle had the week been staged under the roasting conditions seen across Britain, with officials likely relieved that the summer’s flagship meetings escaped the worst of the heat.
Instead, the Royal meeting delivered a high-quality five days of racing, featuring a series of standout performances across both the straight and round courses.
The straight track once again provided plenty of talking points, particularly around the draw, which left punters, trainers and jockeys divided throughout the week. While some attempted to decode perceived biases, others took a simpler view, focusing purely on speed and ability. The debate over stall positions continues to be an annual feature of the meeting, even as results repeatedly show that interpretation is far from straightforward.
What was undeniable, however, was the calibre of the winners across the card. Several headline performers enhanced their reputations at the Royal meeting, setting up intriguing storylines for the remainder of the season.
Bow Echo
Bow Echo produced a performance full of resilience in the St James’s Palace Stakes, getting the job done despite a race that did not unfold smoothly for him. While it may not have been a dominant display, it carried all the hallmarks of a high-class miler who knows how to win under pressure.
The view going forward is that there is more to come from him at the top level this summer. The mile division remains open, and his consistency makes him a major player in upcoming Group 1 contests. On current form, he sets a strong standard and will take plenty of beating if maintaining his progression.
Ombudsman
Ombudsman delivered a striking performance in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes, a victory that has seen him installed as one of the leading middle-distance horses in training. The display underlined his quality, but also reignited discussion around race tactics and the use of pacemakers.
The strong early gallop clearly played into his strengths, continuing a pattern seen in several of his best performances. When the tempo has been genuine, he has been able to produce his most powerful Racing Post Ratings figures, whereas more steadily run contests have not always suited him as well.
Looking ahead, it would be no surprise to see stronger opposition assembled against him later in the summer, particularly from the Ballydoyle operation, who may yet have more depth to deploy at a mile and a quarter.
Scandinavia and Trawlerman
The Gold Cup produced one of the races of the week, with Scandinavia and Trawlerman going toe-to-toe in a relentless staying contest that lived up to expectations.
There is a sense that a rematch later in the season could tell a different story, although opinions are split on how much improvement can realistically be expected from Trawlerman. The effort represented a strong seasonal return, but at eight years old and after such a demanding race, there is a view that the Gold Cup could have left its mark.
Scandinavia, by contrast, appears better placed to build on the performance. Younger and still developing within the staying ranks, he shapes as a horse capable of further improvement, although the division is unlikely to become straightforward as the season progresses. Others, including Rahiebb, remain capable of stepping forward over extended trips at tracks such as Goodwood and York, suggesting the staying scene could remain competitive through the summer.
Precise
Precise offered a performance in the Coronation Stakes that may have been underestimated by some, particularly given how strongly she was forced to travel from an early stage. Rather than a disappointment, it was a display that highlighted her limitations over a mile and hinted at untapped potential over longer distances.
Her pedigree and running style strongly suggest she is not a natural miler, and connections are now expected to explore trips beyond a mile. That shift in distance could prove significant, with the potential for her to develop into a far more effective and competitive filly once stepped up in trip.
