Who has won the Formula One British Grand Prix the most?Â
Some circuits are famous because of their history, some because of the racing they produce Silverstone has both. As the home of British motorsport and the venue of the very first Formula 1 World Championship race back in 1950, it has become one of the most important stops on the calendar.
Every year, the British Grand Prix delivers something memorable. Whether it is unpredictable weather, huge home support or a dramatic fight for victory, Silverstone rarely disappoints.
And as Formula 1 arrives back at the Northamptonshire circuit in 2026, the championship battle has really started to heat up.
Mercedes have been the team to beat so far, sitting at the top of the constructors’ championship with 262 points, while Kimi Antonelli has announced himself as one of the biggest stars of the new era. The Italian driver has taken five wins already this season and leads the drivers’ standings with 156 points.
Behind him, there is a familiar name chasing the championship with Lewis Hamilton closing the gap in recent weeks.
Hamilton has already claimed his first Ferrari victory this season and sits second in the championship standings heading into Silverstone.
And when Formula 1 returns to his home race, there is one record that still belongs firmly to him.
1. Lewis Hamilton – 9 British Grand Prix wins
No driver has dominated Silverstone quite like Lewis Hamilton.
The Ferrari driver holds the record for the most British Grand Prix victories, with nine wins at the circuit. Hamilton’s first Silverstone win came in 2008, producing a brilliant drive in difficult wet conditions that confirmed him to be one of the sport’s biggest stars as a 23-year-old.
During Mercedes’ dominant period, Hamilton became almost unstoppable at Silverstone, winning four consecutive races between 2014 and 2017. He added further victories in 2019, 2020, 2021 and most recently in 2024.
That 2024 victory was especially memorable. After a long wait for another win, Hamilton stood on the top step of the podium at Silverstone once again, creating an emotional moment shared with thousands of British fans.
The dominance of previous years is gone following his move to Ferrari, but Hamilton has already shown in 2026 that he can still deliver when the biggest moments arrive.
With Ferrari fighting near the front and Hamilton currently second in the championship, a tenth Silverstone win would be one of the biggest moments of his career.
2. Alain Prost – 5 British Grand Prix wins
Before Hamilton created his Silverstone legacy, Alain Prost was the circuit’s most successful driver.
The Frenchman won the British Grand Prix five times during a legendary career that saw him become one of Formula 1’s greatest.
His five victories place him comfortably second on the all-time list, although Hamilton’s record has moved the target far beyond what anyone achieved before.
3. Jim Clark, Nigel Mansell and Michael Schumacher – 3 wins each
The third spot is shared by three names that are all iconic in Formula 1 history.
Jim Clark dominated the sport during the 1960s and was regarded as one of the most naturally talented drivers ever to compete.
Nigel Mansell became a fan favourite at Silverstone, with his aggressive style and passionate British following creating some unforgettable home race moments.
Michael Schumacher also enjoyed success at the circuit during Ferrari’s dominant years, adding three British Grand Prix victories to his incredible list of achievements.
Who will take the top step of the podium this year?
Last year’s British Grand Prix showed exactly why Silverstone remains so special.
The 2025 race was full of drama, with changing conditions creating chaos throughout the field. Lando Norris eventually took victory for McLaren after a thrilling afternoon, while Oscar Piastri finished second following a controversial Safety Car penalty.
The race also produced a hugely popular moment as Nico Hülkenberg finally claimed his first Formula 1 podium after 239 attempts.
With another huge crowd expected in 2026, Silverstone once again arrives at the perfect time in the season.
