Who is the 15-year-old cricketing sensation set to play against England this summer?
Indian cricket could be on the verge of witnessing something genuinely historic, as 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi edges closer to a senior international debut that would rewrite the record books.
India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak has backed the teenager’s “natural abilities” and says he would have no concerns about throwing him into Friday’s T20 clash against Ireland in Belfast, should the selectors opt to include him.
If Sooryavanshi does step out at Stormont in either Friday’s opener or Sunday’s second T20, he would become the youngest player ever to feature in international cricket, surpassing the long-standing record held by Sachin Tendulkar, who made his international debut in 1989 aged 16.
The hype around the youngster has been building rapidly after a stunning season in the Indian Premier League, where he piled up 776 runs in 16 innings for the Rajasthan Royals. He also set a new single-season record with 65 sixes, underlining just how destructive he can be with the bat.
What do his coaches think?
Kotak was full of praise when speaking ahead of the Ireland series, insisting the teenager has already shown he can handle top-level pace and pressure.
“He is very talented, there is no doubt,” Kotak said. “In the way he has batted in the IPL and other games, there is no need to say he has the natural abilities.”
He also pointed to the quality of bowling Sooryavanshi has already faced, including international stars in the IPL, as proof he is not overawed by big occasions.
“In the IPL, he has faced Jofra Archer and many other quick bowlers, and it seems nothing is bothering him.”
Even so, Kotak was quick to temper expectations, stressing that a debut is not guaranteed and that final selection decisions rest with the team management.
“He is an extraordinary talent but the captain and head coach will decide the team,” he added. “If he doesn’t play, that’s great too as he is part of the India team and I’m sure he will get his opportunities.”
With India set for a packed white-ball schedule this summer, including a major series against England cricket team, the temptation to fast-track a generational talent is clear. But Kotak warned there is still a balance to strike.
“Dropping someone who has been scoring runs also wouldn’t be right,” he said. “There’s a fine line between giving someone an opportunity and being unfair to some other player.”
Despite his age, Kotak does not believe nerves will be an issue if Sooryavanshi does make his bow on the international stage.
“I don’t think he will have any nervousness,” he said. “The way our team culture is, everyone will try to make him comfortable and make him part of the team. Otherwise, he has looked normal in the way he behaves.”
For now, all eyes are on Belfast. And if the teenager is named in the XI, cricket could be about to meet its newest global headline-maker.
When Could Sooryavanshi Make His Debut Against England?
While attention is currently on the Ireland T20 series, Sooryavanshi could also be in line for involvement later this summer when India take on England in a full white-ball series of T20s and ODIs.
If he does not make his debut this week in Belfast, the England fixtures are seen as another realistic window for his first international appearance. India’s packed schedule means opportunities are expected to come quickly, and selectors are believed to be keen to integrate emerging talent into the squad across the summer.
Even if he is not immediately thrown into action against England, his name is very much in the conversation for the series squad, particularly given his explosive IPL form and ability to handle high-pressure bowling attacks.
