York Dante Festival 2026 Preview: Royal Ascot Stars Headline Knavesmire Action

York Ebor Festival York Racecourse 2026

The York Dante Festival gets under way this week with Classic contenders, Royal Ascot hopefuls and established Group 1 performers all converging on the Knavesmire.

Wednesday’s opening card looks particularly strong, with the renamed Go Local Stores Minster Stakes marking the eagerly-awaited return of last season’s King Charles III Stakes hero American Affair, while the Tattersalls Musidora Stakes once again offers a vital stepping stone towards Epsom glory.

American Affair Returns After Royal Ascot Heroics

Few horses arrive at York Racecourse with a more intriguing profile than American Affair, who makes his first appearance since landing Group 1 honours at Royal Ascot last summer.

Trainer Jim Goldie believes the six-year-old could return as an even stronger sprinter after being given plenty of time to recover from the fetlock injury that curtailed his campaign following that famous victory in the King Charles III Stakes.

American Affair’s comeback comes in the six-furlong Group 2 Go Local Stores Minster Stakes, where regular partner Paul Mulrennan resumes the partnership against a deep field of 13 runners.

The opposition includes Sprint Cup winner Big Mojo, who carries a Group 1 penalty, and last year’s Commonwealth Cup heroine Time For Sandals.

York already holds fond memories for the Goldie stable star, who won a five-furlong handicap at this meeting 12 months ago before progressing rapidly through the sprinting ranks to Group 1 success at Ascot.

While Goldie expects his stable ace to improve for the outing after such a lengthy absence, a bold showing would immediately place him back among the leading contenders for the major sprint prizes later this season.

Musidora Stakes Could Shape The Oaks Picture

The Musidora Stakes has long been one of the most informative Oaks trials of the spring, and this year’s renewal looks no different.

A compact but talented field of six includes Legacy Link, who finished fourth in last year’s Fillies’ Mile and already sits prominently in the Oaks betting.

Also attracting plenty of attention is the unbeaten Felicitas from the yard of Ed Walker, while Aidan O’Brien relies on Moments Of Joy, with Ryan Moore booked for the ride.

O’Brien has already indicated that York’s Classic trials could have a major bearing on his Epsom squad, particularly given the extra week between the York Dante Festival and Epsom Derby weekend this year.

The Ballydoyle trainer believes Moments Of Joy is ideally suited by the step up in trip and conditions on the Knavesmire, suggesting the daughter of Justify could significantly enhance her Oaks credentials with a strong performance.

Christmas Day Leads Ballydoyle’s Dante Challenge

Attention will also centre on the Dante Stakes, traditionally one of the premier Derby trials in the calendar.

O’Brien has confirmed Christmas Day as a leading contender after his impressive Ballysax Stakes success earlier in the spring.

The colt is currently among the leading fancies for the Derby, and the trainer hinted there could be further improvement to come after his comeback effort.

Stablemate Action could also line up after O’Brien admitted equipment changes failed to suit him at Sandown last time out.

With Derby aspirations on the line and a proven history of producing future Epsom stars, the Dante once again looks set to provide one of the defining races of the early Flat season.
