The York Ebor Festival is almost here, with four days of high-class racing set to take centre stage at the Knavesmire.

With the meeting fast approaching, attention is turning to the leading contenders in some of the week’s biggest races. Confirmations for Wednesday’s Group races are due this morning, including whether Ombudsman and Constitution River will both take their chance in what could be a blockbuster Juddmonte International.

While the ante-post favourites have obvious claims, there are also questions surrounding several of them. Here is a look at the leading contenders and whether they represent value at their current prices.

Maltese Cross

Sky Bet Great Voltigeur Stakes, 3.00pm Wednesday
Odds: 5-2

William Haggas’ Maltese Cross has taken another step forward with virtually every start this season, winning three of his four races.

His only defeat came in the Derby, where he finished second behind Christmas Day, but he has continued to progress since Epsom.

That victory delivered a first Group 1 success and Maltese Cross now drops back to Group 2 company for the Voltigeur.

He will have to carry a 5lb penalty for his French success, but another step forward could make that extra weight manageable.

Verdict: It is difficult to assess his chances fully before knowing which Ballydoyle runners will line up against him. However, the manner in which he overcame trouble in France suggests there could still be more improvement to come. Back.

Ombudsman

Juddmonte International Stakes, 3.35pm Wednesday
Odds: Evens

Ombudsman produced one of the performances of his career when winning the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot.

He powered clear to become the first horse since 1995-96 to win the race in consecutive years and now heads to York in search of another major success.

The Juddmonte International represents his return to the Knavesmire after he bypassed this year’s Coral-Eclipse. Standing in his way could be Constitution River, who arrives at York after winning the Eclipse.

The three-year-old will receive 7lb from Ombudsman courtesy of the weight-for-age allowance. That advantage did not prevent Ombudsman from beating Aidan O’Brien’s Delacroix in last year’s Juddmonte International, but Constitution River could represent an even greater challenge.

Verdict: Ombudsman remains an outstanding performer at this distance. Even with Constitution River receiving 7lb, his Royal Ascot performance demonstrated just how good he can be at his best. Back.

Libertango

Sky Bet Lowther Stakes, 1.50pm Thursday
Odds: 11-8

Libertango suffered the first defeat of her career when finishing second to Senorita Bonita in the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes.

That followed a promising start to life on the track, with the George Boughey-trained filly winning her first two starts, including the Group 3 Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Senorita Bonita will head to France for the Group 1 Prix Morny, meaning Libertango will face a different set of challengers at York.

Among them is Alwaysanangel, who finished just a short head behind Libertango at Newmarket. Joseph O’Brien’s filly had only her second career start that day and therefore has considerable potential for improvement.

Verdict: Libertango faces several new opponents, while Alwaysanangel could be even more competitive with that experience under her belt. Avoid.

Kalpana

Legends Global Yorkshire Oaks, 3.35pm Thursday
Odds: 5-4

Kalpana arrives at York after a superb victory in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, where she got the better of Calandagan in a Group 1 battle at Ascot.

She is now expected to return to action against the fillies and mares in the Yorkshire Oaks, although trainer Andrew Balding confirmed there was still one important hurdle to clear before a decision was made.

Balding said earlier in the week: “She’s got a big piece of work to do prior to confirming that we’re going to York. But as long as that goes well, we’re really looking forward to it.”

Aidan O’Brien’s Minnie Hauk is among the potential opposition and will be looking to bounce back after finishing eighth in the King George. Irish Oaks winner Johanna Walsh is another expected contender.

Verdict: Kalpana looks a class above this field when producing her best form, and there is little reason to believe she cannot reproduce that level at York. Back.

Trawlerman

Weatherbys Lonsdale Cup Stakes, 2.25pm Friday
Odds: Evens

Trawlerman has yet to win this season, but the absence of Scandinavia could give him an excellent opportunity to return to winning ways in the Lonsdale Cup.

The pair have met twice this season, with Scandinavia coming out on top in both the Gold Cup and Goodwood Cup.

Trawlerman was much closer at Ascot, while his chances at Goodwood were affected by significant interference from loose horse Amiloc. Even so, it is unlikely that incident would have changed the eventual result.

His lack of a win this term sees him return to Group 2 level, where he won this race 12 months ago. Crucially, he does so without having to carry a 3lb penalty.

Verdict: With Scandinavia absent, Trawlerman should face a much easier task than he has in his previous two starts. Back.

Bacio

Coolmore City Of Troy Nunthorpe Stakes, 3.35pm Friday
Odds: 3-1

American raider Bacio made a striking impression on his first appearance in Britain, overcoming his handicap mark with ease to cruise home in the Palace of Holyroodhouse Stakes at Royal Ascot.

He now takes a significant step up in class for the Nunthorpe, where he will meet a host of established Group 1 sprinters.

Bacio had been expected to contest last year’s Breeders’ Cup Sprint before becoming a non-runner, so his reputation as a high-class sprinter was already established before his Royal Ascot success.

However, the Nunthorpe represents a very different examination. Among his potential rivals is American Affair, who returned to winning form in the King George Stakes at Goodwood.

Verdict: The Group 1 sprinting division is notoriously difficult to predict, and Bacio faces a major test against proven opposition. Avoid.

Notable Speech

Odds: 7-2

Notable Speech was unable to build on his Lockinge Stakes victory when finishing a well-beaten sixth in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot.

That defeat was his third unsuccessful attempt to win at the Berkshire track and further suggested that Ascot may not bring out the best in him.

York offers a fresh opportunity, although his ability to reproduce his best form on the Knavesmire remains uncertain.

He could face Zavateri, who made a solid return when finishing fifth in the Sussex Stakes. Thesecretadversary is another possible contender, although his participation could depend on whether he remains in France for this weekend’s Prix Jacques le Marois following his victory in the Prix Jean Prat.

Verdict: It is difficult to know which version of Notable Speech will turn up at York, while the quality of the opposition makes him difficult to support with confidence. Avoid.
