Arsenal, led by their Spanish Head Coach Mikel Arteta, take on Vincent Kompany’s Bayern Munich side during the League Phase of the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League. These two European heavyweights will be going toe to toe at the Emirates Stadium in the heart of North London. Victory could be crucial for the Gunners, whilst it would also give them some momentum.

The Gunners will be looking to go all the way to the final of this season’s competition, which will take place in Budapest, Hungary, at the Puskas Arena in May 2026. Victory against Bayern would help them take a step closer to achieving this goal, while also looking to automatically secure knockout stage qualification with a top eight finish.

It was following a second place finish in the Premier League last season that saw Arsenal qualify for this season’s UEFA Champions League, with them earning as many as 74 points from their 38 games. They were one of five clubs from England’s top flight to secure their place in this highly prestigious competition, alongside the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, and Newcastle United.

Whilst they have not yet got their hands on this famous trophy, Arsenal have gone close, with them reaching the final back in 2006. They faced Spanish Giants FC Barcelona, who narrowly beat the North London Club 2 – 1 on that occasion. Arteta’s side will be looking to go one better and lift that trophy this season.

There are European honours in the club’s trophy cabinet, with the Gunners having won 1 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup and 1 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, which they lifted in 1994 and 1970 respectively. Starting with the former, this was won when they were 1 – 0 winners against Italian outfit Parma, who were beaten thanks to a winning goal from England forward Alan Smith early on in the first half (20’).

As for the latter, Arsenal won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup after beating Belgian side Anderlecht 4 – 3 on aggregate over two legs.

Moving on to Bayern Munich, they too are a heavyweight of European Football, and they are, of course, former European Champions. The Bavarians have so far won the European Cup/UEFA Champions League on as many as 6 occasions, doing so back in 1974 (4 – 0 vs. Atletico Madrid, Replay), 1975 (2 – 0 vs. Leeds United), 1976 (1 – 0 vs. Saint Etienne), 2001 (5 – 4, penalties vs. Valencia), 2013 (2 – 1 vs. Borussia Dortmund), and most recently in 2020, when they were 1 – 0 winners against French Giants PSG thanks to a winning goal from Kingsley Coman early on in the second half (59’).

The last time Arsenal were victorious against Bayern in a game in the UEFA Champions League was in a Group Stage contest back on Tuesday, 20th October 2015, when the Gunners were 2 – 0 winners at the Emirates Stadium thanks to the goals of Olivier Giroud (77’) and Mesut Ozil (90+4’) late on in the second half.
