Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City are going to be facing League One side Exeter City, led by current Head Coach Gary Caldwell, in the Third Round of the 2025/26 FA Cup at the iconic Etihad Stadium, which is located at the heart of the city of Manchester. The Cityzens will be looking to avoid an upset against the Grecians as they look to reach the Final at Wembley yet again in May 2026.
City have enjoyed plenty of success in the FA Cup over the years, whilst their South Coast counterparts have not yet lifted this historic trophy.
We will start with Manchester City, who have so far won the world’s oldest domestic cup competition on as many as seven occasions, and they will be looking to add an eighth victory in the Final in the English Capital.
City’s maiden victory in this competition came in the 1904 Final at the Crystal Palace in London, where they were 1 – 0 winners against Bolton Wanderers thanks to a winning goal from Billy Meredith in the early stages of the first half (23’).
Their second FA Cup followed this in 1934, when they won 2–1 against Portsmouth at Wembley. Then came a 3 – 1 triumph in 1956 against Birmingham City before winning this domestic cup competition again in 1969, beating Midlands outfit Leicester City 1 – 0.
You have to fast forward to 2011 for their next win in the FA Cup Final at Wembley, which was a 1 – 0 win against Stoke City thanks to a winning goal from Yaya Toure late on in the second half (74’) for Roberto Mancini’s Cityzens side.
They were triumphant yet again in 2019, beating Watford, who were in the Premier League at the time, 6 – 0 at Wembley, thanks to the goals of David Silva (26’), Gabriel Jesus (38’, 68’), Kevin De Bruyne (61’), and Raheem Sterling (81’, 87’).
Then came their seventh and most recent FA Cup victory in the Final from the 2022/23 season, when they were able to beat their cross-city rivals Manchester United 2 – 1, thanks to the goals of Ilkay Gundogan (1’, 51’), whilst United scored their only goal through Bruno Fernandes from the penalty spot in the first half (33’).
Moving on to Exeter City, they have never won this competition or reached the final as of yet. To date, the furthest the Grecians have ever made it in the FA Cup is the quarter-finals, which they reached in the 1980/81 season, when they were beaten 2 – 0 by Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane.
This Third Round FA Cup tie between Manchester City and Exeter City will be the first time that these two clubs have ever met in a competitive fixture.
All eyes will be on who will be victorious in this Third Round tie in the 2025/26 FA Cup at the aforementioned Etihad Stadium, with the Cityzens looking to win some more silverware this season.
