Manchester City, who are currently led by their Spanish Head Coach Pep Guardiola, are going to go toe to toe with either Karl Robinson’s Salford City or Ian Holloway’s Swindon Town in the Fourth Round of the 2025/26 FA Cup. The Cityzens will be hoping to be victorious at the Etihad Stadium as they look to take a step closer to the Final at Wembley in May 2026 with a victory against League Two opposition.
City will find out their opponents when Salford and Swindon Town face each other in their Third Round tie in the FA Cup on the evening of Tuesday, 20th January at the Peninsula Stadium.
As of the time of writing, City is one of the most successful clubs in the history of the world’s oldest domestic cup competition, having won the FA Cup on 7 occasions so far, joint with Aston Villa. Only the likes of Tottenham Hotspur (8), Liverpool (8), Chelsea (8), Manchester United (13), and Arsenal (14) have won it more than they have.
Starting with Manchester City, their first triumph in the FA Cup was back in 1904, when they were 1 – 0 winners against Bolton Wanderers at Crystal Palace in London, thanks to a winning goal from Billy Meredith early on in the first half of this game (23’).
Then came further victories in the FA Cup Final, which took place in 1934 (2 – 1 vs. Portsmouth), 1956 (3 – 1 vs. Birmingham City), 1969 (1 – 0 vs. Leicester City), 2011 (1 – 0 vs. Stoke City), and 2019 (6 – 0 vs. Watford).
City’s most recent FA Cup triumph came in the Final back in 2023, when they were 2 – 1 winners against their fierce cross-city rivals Manchester United at Wembley. Pep Guardiola’s side were able to score through German midfielder Ilkay Gundogan (1’, 51’), whilst United were able to find the net through Bruno Fernandes’ goal from the penalty spot midway through the first half to initially equalise (33’).
Moving on to Salford City, they have never won the FA Cup – the furthest they have reached in this competition is the Third Round, which they have reached this season and last season, where they were beaten 8 – 0 by Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
This emphatic triumph for City was actually the last time that these two clubs met in the FA Cup in their history. The goal scorers on that day were Jeremy Doku (8’, 69’ – Penalty), Divin Mubama (20’), Nico O’Reilly (43’), Jack Grealish (49’ – Penalty), and James McAtee (62’, 72’, 81’).
As for Swindon Town, they too have never won the FA Cup, with the furthest they have reached being the semi-finals, doing so on two occasions in this competition. In their first semi-final back in 1909/10, they were beaten 2 – 0 by Newcastle, whilst in 1911/12, they were beaten 1 – 0 by Barnsley in the end.
The last time that these two clubs met in the FA Cup was in the Third Round back on 7th January 2022, with Manchester City visiting The Nigel Eady County Ground, the home of Swindon Town.
It was a comfortable 4 – 1 triumph for City, with the Cityzens scoring their goals through the likes of Bernardo Silva (14’), Gabriel Jesus (28’), Ilkay Gundogan (59’), and finally Cole Palmer in the second half’s latter stages (82’). Harry McKirdy was the scorer of the only goal for Swindon that year, late on in the second half (78’).
Manchester City entered the 2025/26 FA Cup competition at the Third Round stage, facing League One Exeter City at the Etihad Stadium, beating the Grecians 10 – 1.
City were able to score through Max Alleyne (12’), Rodri (24’), Rico Lewis (49’, 90+1’), Antoine Semenyo (54’), Tijjani Reijnders (71’), Nico O’Reilly (79’), and Ryan McAidoo (86’), whilst there were also own goals from Jake Doyle-Hayes (42’) and Jack Fitzwater (45+2’). George Birch scored Exeter’s only goal of the game in spectacular fashion late on in the second half (90’).
Salford City came up against Lincoln City in the First Round of the 2025/26 FA Cup, beating the Imps 4 – 2 on penalties. A Killian Cahill own goal (23’) and goals from Kallum Cesay (61’), Fabio Borini (87’), and Kelly N’Mai (90+1’) secured a 4 – 0 win in the second round against Leyton Orient, before facing Swindon in Round Three.
Swindon Town went head-to-head with League One’s Rotherham United in the First Round, winning 2 – 1 through goals from Ollie Palmer (72’) and Darren Oldaker (116’) after extra time, with Rotherham initially taking the lead within the first five minutes of the game through Sam Nombe (5’).
Then came the Second Round against Bolton Wanderers, with Ian Holloway’s side managing an emphatic 4 – 0 triumph against the ex-Premier League outfit, following goals from the likes of Aaron Drinan (8’ – Penalty, 76’, 86’) and Joe Snowdon (55’), with the former scoring a hat-trick ahead of facing Salford in the Third Round.
All eyes will be on who will be victorious in this Fourth Round tie in the 2025/26 FA Cup at the aforementioned Etihad Stadium, with the Cityzens looking to win more silverware this season.
