Transfer News: Conor Gallagher to Spurs?
England international Conor Gallagher, formerly of Chelsea, has been linked with a move to Spurs, with the midfielder potentially signing for Thomas Frank’s side from Spanish Giants Atletico Madrid.
With there being less than a month to go until the closure of the 2025 Summer Transfer Window at 7pm on Monday 1st September, there is still plenty of time for Thomas Frank’s Tottenham Hotspur side to get some further deals done to strengthen their squad as they look to have a strong 2025/26 Premier League campaign, where they hope to qualify for the UEFA Champions League for the second season running.
Tottenham has so far been quite active in the window to date, having completed deals for several players from across Europe. So far, they have brought in the likes of Mohammed Kudus (From West Ham United), Mathys Tel (From Bayern Munich), Kevin Danso (From RC Lens), Luka Vuskovic (From Hadjuk Split), Kota Takai (From Kawasaki Frontale), and finally, and most recently Joao Palhinha, with the Portuguese midfielder joining the North London Club on what is going to be a season long loan with an option to buy that is reportedly worth £37 million.
Now, one of the most recent players to have been linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur is former Chelsea and current Atletico Madrid central midfielder Conor Gallagher, who is rumoured to be potentially leaving Diego Simeone’s side this summer.
This is a player of high calibre and reputation, with him not only a full England international, but he has also had standout performances for the likes of Chelsea and Atletico in recent times.
This report comes from the Spanish outlet Fichajes.net, and the fee that could take him back to the English Capital and the Premier League could be €50 million.
He signed for current club Atletico Madrid back on Wednesday, 21st August 2024, for a fee that was reported to be in the region of £34 million – it was a deal that also saw Joao Felix join Conor Gallagher’s former club Chelsea.
In the 2024/25 season, Gallagher was a regular fixture in the team at Atletico Madrid, with the full England international having made 32 appearances out of the 38 games available in La Liga, scoring 3 goals whilst also providing as many assists to boot. He also made a total of 9 appearances in that season’s UEFA Champions League, 6 in the Copa del Rey, and 3 in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
For the start of Conor Gallagher’s journey in the world of football, we have to go back to the time he was with the Epsom Eagles in his hometown of Epsom in Surrey in England.
This was before he was signed by Chelsea for their widely acclaimed academy at the Cobham Training Ground Facility. This took place in 2006 when he, Gallagher, was aged just 6.
The latter stages of his time in the youth academy set up at Chelsea saw him be named as the club’s Academy Player of the Year for the 2018/19 season, during which he had signed a new contract with the Blues back in October 2018. He was also an unused substitute in the 2019 UEFA Europa League Final. He signed another new contract in August 2019.
During his time at Chelsea, Conor Gallagher went out on loan a number of times to a variety of clubs in the English Football League pyramid. His first temporary move away from Stamford Bridge came with EFL Championship outfit Charlton Athletic, with the initial intention being that he would stay with the Addicks for the duration of the 2019/20 season. During his time with the London club, he made 26 appearances, scoring 6 goals and getting 4 assists to boot before being recalled by Chelsea in January 2020.
The reason for the loan recall by Chelsea was when they sent him to Charlton’s fellow second tier outfit, Swansea City, for what remained of that campaign. In 19 appearances for the Swans, he was not able to score a goal, but he did indeed still manage to secure a total of 7 assists to help the Welsh Club to finish in 6th place, where, after earning a total of 70 points from their 46 games, went on to lose to Brentford in the 2020 EFL Championship Play-Off Semi-Finals over two legs, being beaten 3 – 2 on aggregate.
Meanwhile, Charlton were relegated in 22nd place with 48 points from their 46 games, going down by a margin of just a point in the end. Then, for the 2020/21 campaign, Conor Gallagher was sent out on loan again by Chelsea, this time to the Premier League with newly promoted West Bromwich Albion.
With West Brom, he was able to make a total of 30 appearances at the top flight of English Football, impressing in his performances whilst also scoring 2 goals and getting a further 2 assists to boot as well.
Unfortunately for Gallagher and the Baggies, they were immediately relegated from the Premier League after they were able to finish in 19th place with a grand total of 26 points from their 38 games, which saw them miss out on safety by a margin of 13 points in the end.
Despite this, his performances in that campaign were enough to interest another Premier League outfit, with Crystal Palace being the next club to take him on loan for the entire season.
In the 2021/22 campaign, he was able to make a total of 34 appearances in the top flight alone, scoring 8 goals whilst also contributing as many as 3 assists as well, to boot. This helped the Eagles to end up with a highly respectable 12th place finish after they were able to accumulate a grand total of 48 points from their 38 games in the Premier League that season.
His efforts also earned him a regular place in the Chelsea First Team, with Gallagher being a regular part of the Blues’ starting line-up for the 2022/23 season. In the Premier League alone, he made 35 appearances in the league that term, scoring 3 goals whilst also creating 1 assist to boot to help his side to a 12th place finish with 44 points.
In the following campaign (2023/24), which turned out to be his final one at the club, he appeared in all but one of that season’s Premier League games, making 37 appearances in the top flight for the club where he also was able to score 5 goals, whilst also getting a total of 7 assists to boot. His efforts were able to help his side finish in 6th place with 63 points in total.
Then, following the conclusion of that campaign, he made the aforementioned move to Spanish Club Atletico Madrid, who are of course currently led by their Argentine Head Coach Diego Simeone, on Wednesday 21st August 2024 for what was a rumoured transfer fee of £34 million.
There is a possibility that Conor Gallagher potentially remains at Atletico Madrid, though there is also definitely a chance that if he does move away from the Rojiblancos (the Red and Whites), it looks like Spurs, led by Danish Head Coach Thomas Frank, will be amongst his most likely destinations.
All eyes are on Thomas Frank’s first full season in charge of the North London Club. Excitement and anticipation are both building rapidly ahead of the start of the 2025/26 Premier League season, which is about to get underway.
