Bob Olinger Bows Out In Style At Punchestown Festival

Punchestown delivered another dramatic afternoon on Day Three, headlined by an emotional farewell as Bob Olinger signed off his career with a superb victory in the Champion Stayers Hurdle.
The evergreen star proved he still had plenty left in the tank, seeing off familiar rival Teahupoo in the home straight before holding the late charge of Jimmy Du Seuil to secure a perfect send-off.
Connections confirmed pre-race that this would be his final appearance, bringing the curtain down on a stellar career in fitting fashion.
Mullins Magic… but Not as Expected
It was another big day for Willie Mullins, though not in the way many anticipated. With market attention centred on Leader D’Allier, it was instead the unheralded Beauvallon who caused a huge upset at 28-1 under Danny Mullins.
For much of the race, the pace was set by Ionian, ridden by Nico de Boinville in the well-known Constitution Hill colours, alongside Leader D’Allier. However, both faded tamely as Beauvallon and Gordon Elliott’s Immediate Effect powered through late on.
Beauvallon held on in a tight finish, with Gameball back in third, while favourite Colcannon could only manage fifth. Leader D’Allier trailed home ninth, leaving many punters disappointed.
Drama in the Novice Chase
The Barberstown Castle Novice Chase looked set for another Mullins success when Kopek Des Bordes cruised into contention and took the lead approaching the second last. But disaster struck as he veered left and fell, leaving the door wide open.
Harry Cobden was quick to capitalise, guiding Salvator Mundi home safely to claim the prize ahead of Irish Panther. Thankfully, both horse and rider involved in the fall were reported to be okay, though it marked another frustrating Festival moment for Kopek Des Bordes.
Cross-Country Brilliance from Busselton
Enda Bolger’s cross-country expertise was on full display once again as Busselton successfully defended his La Touche Cup crown.
The veteran Vital Island made a bold front-running bid, but Busselton always travelled like the winner. Taking control between the final two fences, he stayed on strongly to fend off late challenges from Outside The Door and The Goffer.
It capped a quick-fire double for jockey Darragh O’Keeffe, who continues to enjoy a remarkable season with his 97th winner.
Come Walk With Me Delivers
There was no stopping Come Walk With Me in the Listed handicap chase, as the well-backed favourite justified strong market support with an emphatic victory.
Despite carrying an 11lb rise for a recent Fairyhouse success, he proved far ahead of the handicapper once again. It was a notable result for trainer-owner Edward Cawley, who also saw Don’t Go Yet and Jalila Moriviere complete a one-three in the race.
Adrienne Strikes for Ted Walsh
Earlier on the card, Adrienne provided a welcome success for veteran trainer Ted Walsh, quickening smartly to land a tightly contested race.
Still a maiden on the Flat after ten starts, she showed plenty of promise here and could yet have a bright future either over hurdles or back on the level.
Late Drama in the Bumper
The final race of the day delivered one of the most thrilling finishes, as Adaboy Mushy stormed from last to first under amateur rider Barry Stone to land the bumper at 9-1.
In a race where timing proved everything, the late surge proved decisive, capping off a day packed with quality, drama and emotional highs.
