Cheltenham Racing Returns this Friday With Willie Mullins and Nicky Henderson Runners in Action
Jump racing returns to Cheltenham Racecourse this Friday, 23rd October, as the two-day Showcase Meeting opens the 2026/27 season, with Willie Mullins, Nicky Henderson and Nigel Twiston-Davies among the leading trainers represented.
The William Hill Showcase takes place on Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th October, featuring 14 races across the two days. The opening afternoon includes the Grade 2 Sharp Novices’ Hurdle, alongside several competitive handicaps and novice chases.
Friday’s action will also mark the first racing at Cheltenham since March, following extensive drainage work at the racecourse earlier this year.
Willie Mullins Sends Jarrive De Mee to Cheltenham
Willie Mullins will be represented by Jarrive De Mee in Friday’s 1:50pm Catesby Estates ‘Chasing Excellence’ Novices’ Chase, with the seven-year-old looking to secure his first victory over fences.
The Irish trainer’s runner showed considerable promise over hurdles, including a fourth-place finish in Grade 1 company at Punchestown. However, his two appearances over fences have both ended in sixth-place finishes, most recently at Listowel in September.
Friday’s contest represents a change in distance for Jarrive De Mee, who drops back to two miles after competing over considerably longer trips on his previous two outings.
The Mullins runner will face competition from several British and Irish challengers, including Dan Skelton’s Ice Jet and Gordon Elliott’s Bowensonfire, in one of the afternoon’s notable contests.
Henderson and Twiston-Davies Target Grade 2 Success
The feature race on Friday’s card is the Grade 2 Oddschecker Novices’ Hurdle, also known as the Sharp Novices’ Hurdle, scheduled for 3:00pm.
Nicky Henderson’s Planters Punch arrives unbeaten in three starts over hurdles, having impressed during the spring. The four-year-old will now face a higher standard of opposition as he makes his first appearance of the new National Hunt season.
Among his rivals is Scott’s Legacy, trained by Nigel and Willy Twiston-Davies. The four-year-old made a successful hurdling debut at Newton Abbot in September, defeating a heavily backed favourite by six lengths.
Dan Skelton is another trainer represented in the contest, with Cooltobecareless arriving following a victory earlier this month. The Grade 2 contest offers an early opportunity to assess several promising novice hurdlers against stronger opposition.
Continuance and Palacio Among Friday’s Other Contenders
Martin Keighley’s Continuance is set to contest the 2:25pm Foundation Developments Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle, having established a consistent record despite going without a victory since March 2025.
The five-year-old has recorded several second-place finishes during that period and will once again compete over a distance close to two miles. Keighley’s familiarity with Cheltenham could prove useful as Continuance attempts to return to winning form.
Later in the afternoon, Sam Thomas will be represented by Palacio in the 3:35pm squareintheair.com Handicap Chase. The eight-year-old produced an impressive five-length victory at Newbury before a disappointing appearance at Ayr and returns to action following a summer break.
Cheltenham Begins Its Road Towards the 2027 Festival
The Showcase Meeting also represents an important occasion for Cheltenham Racecourse itself after substantial repairs to its drainage system.
The racecourse cancelled its remaining fixtures following the 2026 Cheltenham Festival to allow the work to be completed. More than a kilometre of drainage was replaced or upgraded, with the track subsequently undergoing extensive inspections ahead of its return.
Saturday’s programme will provide another seven races, with the first scheduled for 1:10pm and the final contest at 4:40pm.
For racegoers looking ahead to the remainder of the National Hunt season, Eventmasters offers Cheltenham Racecourse hospitality packages for meetings throughout 2026/27, including the Cheltenham Festival 2027, taking place from Tuesday 16th to Friday 19th March.
With established trainers sending promising runners to the Showcase Meeting, attention now turns to which horses can make an early impression at Cheltenham as the National Hunt season gathers momentum.
