Royal Ascot Day 3 Preview: Gold Cup Takes Centre Stage
Royal Ascot reaches one of its most iconic afternoons on Thursday as the Gold Cup takes centre stage, bringing together the staying stars of the sport in a race that often defines careers and creates racing legends.
While the Gold Cup will understandably dominate the headlines, there is quality throughout the card, with exciting three-year-olds, Classic contenders and future Group One performers all set to take their chance on another fascinating day at Ascot.
Here we take a look at Day three’s most exciting contests.
3:40pm – Ribblesdale Stakes
The Ribblesdale often provides a platform for the next generation of staying fillies and this year’s renewal looks particularly strong.
Juddmonte’s Legacy Link arrives with some of the strongest form on offer after a productive spring campaign. She returned with victory in the Musidora at York before chasing home Oaks heroine Thundering On at Epsom. That performance confirmed her class, although the effort she put in around the demanding Epsom track means she will need to reproduce that level once again here.
French challenger Gilded Prize adds an intriguing international angle. Francis-Henri Graffard’s filly looked a star in the making when winning her first three starts but was unable to continue that unbeaten run at ParisLongchamp last month. Connections blamed the testing ground and a return to quicker conditions could bring about a much-improved performance.
There is depth throughout the field too, with Eart Shot and Brilliant Star among several runners capable of making their presence felt if the principals fail to fire.
4:15pm – Gold Cup
This is the race everyone has been waiting for.
The Gold Cup is Royal Ascot’s ultimate staying test, a race that demands class, courage and limitless stamina. This year’s renewal has all the ingredients of a memorable contest.
Aidan O’Brien’s Scandinavia arrives as the horse many will want to beat. Last season’s St Leger winner has continued to progress and now seeks a sixth consecutive victory. His laid-back attitude has become one of his greatest strengths, allowing him to settle effortlessly before finding plenty when it matters most. With Ryan Moore in the saddle and Ballydoyle chasing yet another Gold Cup success, he looks a worthy market leader.
The biggest threat could come from Rahiebb. Roger Varian’s improving stayer advertised his credentials in style when producing a commanding display in the Yorkshire Cup on his seasonal return. He was only narrowly behind Scandinavia when the pair met at Doncaster last year and arrives with every right to believe he can reverse that form.
Then there is the defending champion.
Trawlerman returns looking to become a back-to-back Gold Cup winner after his memorable success 12 months ago. He has not been seen since landing the Long Distance Cup on British Champions Day last autumn, but nobody will question his stamina reserves. If he returns at the same level, he could prove incredibly difficult to wear down in the closing stages.
For those searching for value beyond the leading trio, both Caballo De Mer and Al Riffa possess enough quality to outrun bigger odds and challenge for the places.
5:35pm – Hampton Court Stakes
The Hampton Court Stakes regularly throws up future stars and this year’s edition looks another excellent renewal.
Ballydoyle are doubly represented by Endorsement and Italy, two colts who have long been held in high regard.
Endorsement arrives after an impressive success at Leopardstown and looks to have rediscovered his best form at the perfect time. The booking of Ryan Moore catches the eye and a return to 10 furlongs could suit him well.
Italy remains one of the more intriguing runners on the card. He showed plenty of promise earlier in the season when finishing behind Derby winner Christmas Day in the Ballysax Stakes and has been kept fresh since. Connections clearly feel there is plenty more to come and the betting market may provide some clues about expectations.
Elsewhere, Craven winner Oxagon attempts to bounce back after finding the French Derby a step too far, while Morshdi and Generic are among several runners capable of making this a highly competitive contest.
Another Classic Royal Ascot Afternoon Awaits
The Gold Cup brings together the sport’s toughest and most durable performers, while the supporting races showcase some of the brightest young talent in training. It is a combination that has made Thursday one of the most anticipated days of the entire meeting.
Whether Scandinavia can continue his rise, Rahiebb can announce himself as the new staying force, or Trawlerman can defend his crown, all eyes will be fixed on Ascot when the tapes rise for the race that defines Royal Ascot’s staying division.
