York Ebor Festival: Five big talking points ahead of the meeting
York’s Ebor Festival gets underway on Wednesday with a blockbuster Juddmonte International, as Ombudsman and Constitution River go head-to-head in what promises to be one of the races of the season.
But the £1.5 million Group 1 is just the beginning. With a Group 1 contest on each of the four days, some of the biggest names in Flat racing set to descend on the Knavesmire and almost £7.5 million in prize money up for grabs, there is plenty to look forward to across the festival.
Here are five of the key talking points ahead of this year’s Ebor Festival.
A record-breaking Ebor Festival
This year’s Juddmonte International will be the richest race ever staged at York, with £1.5 million in prize money on offer.
That contributes to the most valuable Ebor Festival in the track’s history, with just under £7.5 million available across the four days. The total represents an increase of more than £300,000 on last year, while every race on the card is worth at least £100,000.
The increase follows a rise in prize money at several of Britain’s other major Flat meetings this summer, including Royal Ascot and Glorious Goodwood.
York’s Chief Executive William Derby said: “The prize-money increase is something we’re hugely proud of, and we’re also delighted to have World Pool across all four days this year for the first time following the upgrade of the City of York Stakes to a Group 1 last year.
“We’ve had more media interest from around the world and there’s a real buzz about the place. From Royal Ascot through all the major summer festivals, this is all something British racing can be really proud of.”
York welcomes the world
The Ebor Festival has increasingly become a major international attraction, and this year is no different, with leading contenders and connections travelling to York from across Europe, Asia, the United States and Australia.
Japanese jockey Joao Moreira is set to ride Satono Reve, while Australian sprinter Asfoora will make what is expected to be her final appearance in the Nunthorpe Stakes.
Derby said: “Joao Moreira is flying in to ride Satono Reve for Japan and it’s brilliant to get arguably Hong Kong’s best-ever jockey coming over. Then you have Asfoora’s swansong, with Henry Dwyer and the owner, Akram El-Fahkri, coming over for it.
“The live pictures are going out to 150 countries, including lots of territories taking it for the first time, and the Opening Show will also be live on ITV1 in front of a York audience. There are lots of innovations.”
Nunthorpe Stakes favourite Bacio has already spent time at York preparing for his big race.
“He’s been with us for the last week or so,” Derby said. “His team have enjoyed going out on the Knavesmire in the mornings with the dog walkers, but I don’t think they’ve seen anything like it!”
Cooler conditions arrive at the right time
After a summer dominated by hot and dry conditions, York has received some much-needed rain ahead of the festival.
Around 6mm fell at the track on Sunday night, with the going described as good (fast). York uses the word “fast” in brackets to indicate that conditions are towards the quicker end of good.
Derby believes the track is in excellent condition despite the challenging summer.
“Up until Sunday night, we’d only had 17mm of rain since June 19, and 22 days in that time were over 25C. The track looks amazing considering the conditions that Adrian Kay [head groundsman] and his team have dealt with,” he said.
“We anticipated a change in the weather and our last hot day was Friday, so we suspended irrigation after that. We’re expecting some more rain before gates opening on Wednesday, as showers come through on Monday night. Then it’s a mixture of clouds, sunny spells and showers through the week, with more organised showers on Thursday.”
A royal presence at York
Wednesday’s Juddmonte International will have a special guest in attendance, with the Queen set to visit York for her third Ebor Festival as the track’s official patron.
Her visit will include meetings with some of the people who help make the festival happen behind the scenes, as well as jockey Joe Fanning.
Derby said: “She’ll be meeting some unsung heroes, like our cleaning team, the St John Ambulance team and those who put the track back together, as well as our community partners.
“She’ll also meet Joe Fanning because we’ve got a presentation for him after the Acomb Stakes. Joe and his wife Sarah are with us as guests and the Queen wants to see Joe, which is brilliant.”
Jockeys’ championship takes centre stage
The battle for the British Flat jockeys’ championship is another storyline to follow throughout the meeting.
Billy Loughnane currently holds a 15-point lead over Oisin Murphy, but the pair will have very different schedules at York.
Murphy is booked to ride on all four days, including aboard Asfoora in the Nunthorpe Stakes, while Loughnane will only be at the track on Thursday.
York will keep racegoers updated on the contest throughout the festival.
“We’re going to give it good focus on our big screens,” Derby said. “It’s such an interesting contest between Billy and Oisin and we’ll be keeping tabs on the standings on them.”
