Arsenal, who are currently led by their Spanish Head Coach Mikel Arteta, are going to go head-to-head with Ryan Lowe’s Wigan Athletic, with the Latics currently playing their football in England’s third tier, League One. This FA Cup Fourth Round tie is being played in the heart of North London at the iconic Emirates Stadium, with the Gunners looking to win this trophy yet again at Wembley in May 2026.
As of the time of writing, Arsenal are indeed the most successful side in the history of the world’s oldest domestic cup competition, having won it 14 times. Meanwhile, Wigan did, of course, win it themselves for the first and so far only time back in 2013.
Starting with Arsenal, their maiden FA Cup triumph came back in 1930, when they were able to beat Huddersfield Town 2 – 0 thanks to the goals of Alex James (16’) and John Lambert (88’).
Further final victories then followed in 1936 (1 – 0 vs. Sheffield United), 1950 (2 – 0 vs. Liverpool), 1971 (2 – 1 vs. Liverpool), 1979 (3 – 2 vs. Manchester United), 1993 (2 – 1 vs. Sheffield Wednesday, Replay – After Extra Time), 1998 (2 – 0 vs. Newcastle United), 2002 (2 – 0 vs. Chelsea), 2003 (1 – 0 vs. Southampton), 2005 (5 – 4 on penalties vs. Manchester United), 2014 (3 – 2 vs. Hull City), 2015 (4 – 0 vs. Aston Villa), and 2017 (2 – 1 vs. Chelsea).
Then came their 14th and most recent FA Cup triumph, which came in the Final back in 2020 at Wembley. They were able to get the better of Chelsea once again, beating them 2 – 1 thanks to the goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (28’ – Penalty, 67’), who scored a brace, whilst it was Christian Pulisic who scored the only goal of the day for Chelsea (5’), initially taking the lead.
Moving on to Wigan Athletic, they won their maiden and so far only FA Cup back in 2013, when they were shock 1 – 0 winners at Wembley thanks to the winning goal from Ben Watson in second half stoppage time (90+1’). To get to that Final, the Latics had to get the better of the likes of Bournemouth (1 – 0, Replay), Macclesfield Town (1 – 0), Huddersfield Town (4 – 1), Everton (3 – 0), and Millwall (2 – 0).
Wigan almost made it to the 2014 Final, where they would have faced Hull City. However, they were beaten narrowly 4 – 2 on penalties by Arsenal at Wembley in the semi-final after the two clubs drew 1 – 1 after extra time.
That was the most recent competitive encounter between the two clubs, and the only time that they had faced each other in the FA Cup ahead of 2026.
Arsenal did face Wigan in a Premier League game before the 2014 FA Cup Semi Final, winning 4 – 1 at the Emirates, thanks to the goals of Lucasz Podolski (11’, 68’), Theo Walcott (63’), and Aaron Ramsey (71’), whilst the Latics scored their only goal through Shaun Moloney in the final moments of the first half to initially equalise for the away side (45’).
In the Third Round of the 2025/26 FA Cup, Arsenal were 4 – 1 winners over Championship side Portsmouth at Fratton Park thanks to a hat-trick from Gabriel Martinelli (25’, 51’, 72’) and an own goal from Andre Dozzell (8’). Pompey did take the lead through Colby Bishop within the first five minutes of the game (3’).
As for Wigan, they beat Hemel Hempstead 5 – 3 on penalties in the first round before then getting the better of League Two’s Barrow in the second round, beating them 4 – 3 on penalties. Then, in the Third Round, a goal from Harrison Bettoni was enough to win Wigan the game against Championship side Preston North End (75’).
All eyes will be on who will be victorious in this Fourth Round tie in the 2025/26 FA Cup at the aforementioned Emirates Stadium, with the Gunners looking to win some more silverware this season.
