Then, in the knockout play-off round, they knocked out Italian Giants and serial Champions League winners Juventus by beating them 7–5 on aggregate. Galatasaray won 5–2 at home in Istanbul in the first leg, then narrowly lost 3–2 in Turin in the away leg, advancing despite the defeat.

Liverpool’s most recent victory against Galatasaray in the Champions League was on Matchday two in a Group C fixture of the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League at Anfield, where the Reds were able to win 3 – 2 in the end. Peter Crouch (9’, 52’) and Luis Garcia (14’) scored the goals for the home side that day.
