Manchester United are set to go face to face with Wolves once again in the 2023/24 Premier League season at Old Trafford. Erik Ten Hag’s Red Devils have their sights set on yet another top four spots with hopes high that they can also be in the title conversation this term, whereas Wolves will look to improve on their midtable finish last season under Head Coach Gary O’Neil.
Ahead of the 2022/23 season, ex-Utrecht and Ajax Head Coach Erik Ten Hag was named as Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s permanent successor at Old Trafford. This followed Michael Carrick and Ralf Rangnick’s temporary spells in charge of the Red Devils. After his time with Go Ahead Eagles, Bayern Munich II and Utrecht, the Dutchman decided to join Ajax in 2017, replacing Marcel Keizer at the Johan Cruyff Arena.
Over the course of his 5 year spell at the Dutch giants, Ten Hag won a total of 6 trophies: 3 Eredivisie titles (2018/19, 2020/21 & 2021/22), 2 KNVB Cups (2018/19 & 2020/21) and the Johan Cruyff Shield in 2019. In 2019, Ajax famously beat Real Madrid 4-1 and Italian heavyweights Juventus to reach the semi-final, where they were unfortunate to lose on away goals after drawing 3-3 on aggregate.
Erik Ten Hag was then announced as Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s permanent successor at Old Trafford ahead of the 2022/23 season after Michael Carrick and Ralf Rangnick’s temporary spells in charge of the Red Devils. Last campaign was his first full season in charge, guiding the club to a 3rd place finish with 75 points – 3 places and 17 points better off than the season before (2021/22).
They also won the Carabao Cup, beating Newcastle United 2-0 at Wembley whilst also reaching the FA Cup Final, where they narrowly lost 2-1 to Manchester City.
Marcus Rashford with 17 Premier League goals was the Red Devils’ leading goal scorer with Bruno Fernandes second in terms of goals in the league last term with a total of 8. Anthony Martial and Jadon Sancho both got 6 goals each in the Premier League last season.
In October 2022, Bruno Lage was dismissed by Wolves, before being replaced by ex-Sevilla and Real Madrid Head Coach Julen Lopetegui in November 2022. After being in some relegation trouble at the bottom end of the Premier League table, the Spaniard guided Wolves to a 13th place finish with 41 points. This saw them finish the 2022/23 campaign a very comfortable 7 points clear of the relegation zone.
However, the Spaniard left the club at the start of the current Premier League season before being replaced by ex-Bournemouth boss Gary O’Neil. After initially taking charge on a caretaker basis, O’Neil eventually went on to become Scott Parker’s permanent successor in November 2022. The Cherries went on to finish 5 points clear of the bottom three in 15th place. But despite avoiding relegation, Gary O’Neil went on to leave the club at the end of the 2022/23 Premier League season.
With 6 goals each, Daniel Podence and Rúben Neves were Wolves’ joint top goal scorers last season. Hwang Hee-Chan came second with 3 goals, whilst summer signing Matheus Cunha and Adama Traoré got 2 goals each.
Manchester United and Wolves first met in a league fixture back on 15th October 1892 when United were known as Newton Heath. The Red Devils won the match 10-1. Overall, Manchester United have won 54 of their 111 meetings to date compared to Wolves’ 37. There have been 20 draws between these two clubs to date.
The most recent meetings between these two teams took place on 13th May 2023 in the Premier League in Old Trafford. Manchester United won the match 2-0, thanks to goals coming from Anthony Martial (32’) and Alejandro Garnacho (90+4’).
