A Spurs side who are led by their Danish Head Coach Thomas Frank will be taking on Marcelino’s Villarreal in the League Phase of the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League. This game will be taking place at the iconic Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, which is situated at the heart of North London.

Tottenham will be looking for what would a crucial victory in this match against the Yellow Submarine, and they know that three points in this fixture would indeed take them a step closer to them securing a top eight finish. This would see them qualify for the knockout stages of this season’s competition automatically, and they would avoid the play-offs.

A place in the latest iteration of European Club Football’s Premier Club Cup Competition was successfully sealed by Spurs thanks to a win in the 2025 UEFA Europa League Final against fellow Premier League heavyweights Manchester United in Bilbao. This 1 – 0 victory was sealed thanks to what was a winning goal from their Wales international forward Brennan Johnson, who scored against the Red Devils in the latter stages of the first half (42’).

Tottenham are most certainly no strangers to European Football, and they have been playing Champions League football frequently in recent years. Whilst they are yet to win this very prestigious competition, they have come very close to doing so, with them reaching the Final in 2019, where they were unfortunately defeated by Liverpool.

In that same season, there was that famous night in Amsterdam in the Semi Finals. In the second leg, they were 1 – 0 down on aggregate, and it did look as if Spurs were out of the competition at the hands of Dutch Giants Ajax after they went 2 – 0 down thanks to goals from the likes of Matthijs de Ligt (5’) and Hakim Ziyech (35’). Then, a famous hat-trick from Brazilian forward Lucas Moura (55’, 59’, 90+6’) saw Spurs win 3 – 2 on the night, with them winning the Semi Final on away goals.

Moving on to Villarreal, they too are regulars in European competitions, and they have also participated in the UEFA Champions League on several occasions in recent years. Their place in this season’s tournament was confirmed at the end of last season, thanks to what was a 5th place finish in La Liga after they had managed to earn a grand total of 70 points from their 38 games.

The Yellow Submarine have also never got their hands on the Champions League – the furthest stage of the competition that they have reached is the Semi Finals, which they have so far done twice so far. They first reached the final four in the 2005/06 campaign, which saw them lose to Spurs’ North London rivals Arsenal 1 – 0 over two legs.

They next made it to this round in the 2021/22 season under the stewardship of Unai Emery, where they were defeated 5 – 2 on aggregate over two legs by the eventual winners – Liverpool.

This will be the first time that Spurs and Villarreal have ever met in the entire history of the UEFA Champions League. Tottenham will, of course, be looking to win this inaugural encounter between the two clubs in this highly prestigious competition.
