Gaelic Warrior And Fact To File Set For Blockbuster Punchestown Gold Cup Clash

Paul Townend celebrates Gaelic Warrior’s victory in Cheltenham Festival Gold Cup 2026
The stage is set for the Punchestown Gold Cup, the standout contest of the festival, as Gaelic Warrior and Fact To File renew their compelling rivalry in what promises to be a high-class staying chase.
Gaelic Warrior vs Fact To File
The pair arrive with their scores level at two wins apiece, and little separates them on form, ability or profile heading into another headline clash.
Gaelic Warrior comes here as the Cheltenham Gold Cup winner and has enjoyed the season of his life. His campaign has been marked by consistent top-level performances, including a tough victory in the John Durkan over this course and a narrow defeat in the King George at Kempton.
He was beaten by Fact To File in the Irish Gold Cup at Leopardstown, but that came on a track where he has not always produced his best, and a return to Punchestown is expected to suit him better. His record here, with three wins from four starts, underlines his success in County Kildare.
Fact To File brings a slightly different profile into the race, arriving fresh after missing the Cheltenham Festival due to ground conditions. That decision could prove significant given the likely similar surface here.
His performance in the Irish Gold Cup was a career-best effort, travelling and jumping with success before getting past Gaelic Warrior in a strong finish.
The rivalry has developed into one of the defining stories of the staying chase division this season. Their first meeting went to Fact To File in a novice contest at Leopardstown, before Gaelic Warrior struck back at Punchestown in the John Durkan. At Kempton, Gaelic Warrior again held a narrow edge in finishing position, although neither horse won the race, and Leopardstown most recently swung momentum back in favour of Fact To File.
Recent history suggests backing up at Punchestown after Cheltenham can be difficult even for elite performers, such as Galopin De Champs who was never able to achieve the double.
Who Could Cause An Upset In The Gold Cup?
Behind the leading pair, Inothewayurthinkin, last season’s Gold Cup winner has yet to recapture his best form this season but has the class to be competitive if returning to somewhere near his peak.
Grangeclare West reappears after an early exit in the Grand National and is relatively unexposed at this level, while Champ Kiely is another who may be ridden with restraint in what looks a demanding test at this grade.
The supporting Grade 1 action on the card adds further quality to a strong Punchestown programme, with competitive fields across both the staying novice hurdles and the bumper pointing towards Cheltenham form holding significant value.
Grade 1 Race & Stay At Punchestown I.N.H
In the Grade 1 Race & Stay At Punchestown I.N.H, the focus once again falls on Cheltenham Champion Bumper form, which has proved a reliable guide in recent seasons.
The Mourne Rambler arrives with a strong claim after a decisive victory at Cheltenham, where he travelled strongly throughout before quickening clear under Colin Keane to score by over two lengths. That performance suggested a horse with plenty of scope for further improvement, and connections will be hopeful he can continue the trend of Champion Bumper winners successfully doubling up at Punchestown.
Noel Meade’s five-year-old has been progressing well and is expected to improve again with that experience behind him. The stable remains in solid form, adding further encouragement to his chances.
The principal threat may come from Dromard, who made a striking impression when winning on debut at Gowran Park in March. He represents the Willie Mullins’ yard and brings obvious potential into a race that often rewards progressive types rather than exposed form.
Grade 1 Channor Real Estate Group Novice Hurdle
Earlier on in the day, the Grade 1 Channor Real Estate Group Novice Hurdle over three miles presents a more open and tactical contest, with several key Cheltenham runners returning to action. The Albert Bartlett form has not been strongly advertised since the Festival, and that may encourage connections of other contenders to take a different path here.
Sortudo stands out as an intriguing contender in this context. He was unable to land a blow in the Turners Novices Hurdle at Cheltenham, where the pace and tempo appeared to catch him out, but the step up in trip looks a natural progression. A strong, imposing type, he has long been viewed as a horse likely to improve over further and this stamina test at three miles could allow him to show his true ability. If able to settle better in the early stages, he looks well placed to finish the season on a more successful note.
Elsewhere, the Albert Bartlett form is represented by Johnny’s Jury, Fruit De Mer and The Passing Wife, although there is a sense that hard races at Cheltenham and subsequently at Aintree may leave little margin for improvement. Doctor Steinberg, who went off favourite at the Festival, remains a horse with plenty of ability but will need to settle more efficiently in order to produce his best over this extended distance.
The mare Zanoosh adds further intrigue should she take her place, bringing a different profile into what already looks a deeply competitive staying novice hurdle.
All eyes ultimately remain on the Punchestown Gold Cup with Gaelic Warrior and Fact To File leading the market once again. Around them, a competitive supporting cast will need significant improvement to get involved, leaving the two stablemates to set the standard in what promises to be another edition of this superb rivalry.
