2025 Six Nations: Standout Matches so far
This year’s Guinness Six Nations Championship is still in its early stages, but there have already been some standout matches in the first two weeks of action.
The much anticipated 2025 Guinness Six Nations Championship is now well underway, with some of the best players in Europe and the world going head to head as England, France, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, and Italy compete to win the latest Championship title in what is one of the most prestigious international tournaments in the enthralling world of rugby.
Simon Easterby’s Ireland will have their eyes on winning the Six Nations for the third time in a row, and if they do so, they will become the first nation to have ever achieved this feat in what would be a truly historic achievement.
France, they are looking to win their 7th Championship title and their first since 2022. As for England, they have to date won this highly prestigious tournament the most with seven victories, and they will be looking to win their 8th Championship this year under the stewardship of their current Head Coach Steve Borthwick. If they did so, this would be their first since their most recent triumph in 2020.
Wales have suffered with poor form so far, and this has led to the dismissal of their now-previous Head Coach Warren Gatland, who was replaced by Cardiff Rugby Head Coach Matt Sherratt, who succeeds him for the next three matches in the 2025 Six Nations.
Now, we are going to take a look back at the first two rounds of the 2025 Guinness Six Nations and reflect on the standout matches so far from this year’s Championship.
France 43 – 0 Wales – Stade de France
We will begin with the opening match of the 2025 Six Nations, which was a battle between Fabien Galthié’s France and Wales, who were then led by former Head Coach Warren Gatland at the Parc des Princes in Paris.
This was a devastating game for Wales, who failed to get on the scoreboard throughout the entirety of the game in the French Capital. It was complete dominance from the French hosts, who managed to score no less than seven tries, as well as four conversions to win 43 – 0.
Starting with the tries, they were scored in this game by Theo Attissogbe (2), Louis Bielle-Biarrey (2), Julien Marchand, Emilien Gailleton, and Gregory Alldritt. Meanwhile, it was Thomas Ramos who got all of France’s tries in this game.
Scotland 31 – 19 Italy – Murrayfield
We now move on to the game between Scotland and Italy at Murrayfield, with the two teams led by Head Coaches Gregor Townsend and Gonzalo Quesada respectively in Edinburgh. It was an entertaining game that saw 6 tries being scored between them – 5 were scored by the hosts, whilst the Italian visitors got one. Scotland scored 3 successful conversions to Italy’s 1, whilst Italy also scored 4 penalties in what was a 31 – 19 win for the hosts.
Starting with hosts Scotland, their tries were scored thanks to Rory Darge, Huw Jones (3), and Ben White, whilst it was Finn Russell who got all three of their conversions. Moving on to Italy, Ignacio Brex got their only try of the day, whilst Tommaso Allan got their only conversion, as well as all four of their successful penalties.
This game got Scotland’s 2025 Guinness Six Nations campaign off to the best possible start as they look to surpass the 4th place finish with 12 points that they achieved back in the 2024 Championship.
Ireland 27 – 22 England – Aviva Stadium
We now go to the Aviva Stadium in Dublin for the game that took place between Simon Easterby’s Ireland and Steve Borthwick’s England in what was the first round of Six Nations matches for 2025. It was an enthralling game that eventually saw Ireland come out on top with a 27 – 22 victory against their fierce rivals.
Both sides were pretty even when it came to tries, with Ireland scoring four compared to England’s total of three. Both of these teams did get 2 conversions and one penalty each.
We will start with the hosts for this game Ireland, whose successful tries in this game came from the likes of Jamison Gibson-Park, Bundee Aki, Tadhg Beirne, and Dan Sheehan. It was Jack Crowley who got their two conversions whilst their penalty was scored thanks to Sam Prendergast.
As for England, it was Cadan Murley, Tom Curry, and Tommy Freeman who got their tries, whilst it was Marcus Smith who got their two conversions of the game. Smith was also the scorer of England’s only successful penalty of the game.
England 26 – 25 France – Twickenham
The final game that we are going to be taking a look at is the one that saw Borthwick’s England and Galthié’s France at the iconic Twickenham in what was the second game of the 2025 Guinness Six Nations Championship for both teams. It was a dramatic and enthralling 26 – 25 victory for the hosts in the end.
This win was earned in dramatic fashion, with this triumph being sealed thanks to a tremendous 79th minute try from Elliot Daly that led to scenes of joy and relief for players and fans alike at Twickenham.
Daly’s try was England’s fourth of the game, and it had followed earlier tries from the likes of Ollie Lawrence, Tommy Freeman, and Fin Baxter. Fin and Marcus Smith both shared three conversions between them as well.
As for France, it was Louis Bielle-Biarrey (2) and Damian Penaud who were to be the sources of their three tries in this game, whilst it was Thomas Ramos who scored the visitors’ two conversions, as well as France’s two penalties.
All eyes will be on the remaining three rounds of the 2025 Guinness Six Nations, with many of the remaining games promising to be enthralling for all those who take in the action across the world. The Championship is set to resume following the one week break on Saturday 22nd February, with Round 3 opening with Wales’ game with Ireland at the Principality in a 14:15 kick-off. England will then face Scotland at Twickenham later on that afternoon, in what is going to be a 16:45 kick-off.
