The Gunners will be amongst the favourites to go on and win this season’s competition, with the final taking place at the famous Puskas Arena in Budapest, Hungary, in May 2026. Arteta’s side knows that momentum will be vital if they are to go all the way to the final, and victory against their Greek counterparts would undoubtedly help them on their way. They will first be looking to secure a top eight spot, which will see them successfully and automatically qualify for the knockout rounds.

A place in this season’s Champions League was secured for Arsenal after they had managed to finish as runners-up in the Premier League at the end of last season, earning a grand total of 74 points from their 38 games. The only team to finish above them last term was Liverpool. Arsenal were one of five English clubs to qualify for the Champions League, alongside the Reds, Manchester City, Newcastle United, and Chelsea.

Whilst they have not yet managed to get their hands on the trophy, Arsenal have indeed made it to the final of the Champions League, doing so back in the 2005/06 season, when they unfortunately lost narrowly 2 – 1 to Spanish Giants FC Barcelona.

Arsenal has still had success in European competitions in the past. They beat Italian Club Parma 1 – 0 in order to win the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup back on 4th May 1994, with the winning goal being scored by Alan Smith early in the first half (20’). They have also won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, doing so in 1970 when they were able to beat Belgian giants Anderlecht 4 – 3 on aggregate over two legs.

Moving on to Olympiacos, the Greek Champions are regulars in European Football, with them often participating in the Champions League in recent times. The furthest they have ever progressed in this competition was the Quarter Finals, achieved back in the 1998/99 campaign when they were knocked out by Italian Giants Juventus, losing 3 – 1 on aggregate over two legs.

And, back in the 2023/24 season, they did go on to win the UEFA Conference League Final, beating Italian side Fiorentina 1 – 0 after extra time following a winning goal from Ayoub El Kaabi late on into the second half of extra time (116’).

The last time that Arsenal and Olympiacos met in the UEFA Champions League was back on Wednesday, 9th December 2015, in what was their final game of the 2015/16 Group Stages. It was a comfortable and well deserved 3 – 0 victory away from home for Arsenal at the Stadio Georgios Karaiskakis in Piraeus. It was a hat-trick from French international striker Olivier Giroud, who got the victory for the Gunners on that day (29’, 49’, 67’ – Penalty).
