Arne Slot’s Liverpool are set to take on a PSV side who are currently led by their Dutch Head Coach Peter Bosz during the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League League Phase. The game will be taking place at the iconic and historic Anfield in the heart of Merseyside, where they will be looking to emerge victorious in order to gather some fresh momentum.
The Reds are amongst the favourites to win this season’s competition, and they will be looking to go all the way to the final, where they will aim to become the reigning Champions of Europe for what would be the seventh time in their illustrious history. They will want to finish in the top eight to automatically qualify for the knockout rounds on their way to a potential final, and momentum is very important as they look to progress.
As they are the reigning Champions of English Football, they were, of course, amongst the clubs who were able to qualify for this season’s competition. Once they had played all 38 of their games in the Premier League last season, they had been able to accumulate as many as 84 points in the end, overall, which was enough to see them secure top spot by a margin of as many as 10 points, with them beating Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal to top spot. The Gunners had ended up with 74 points to their name.
With 6 European Cups/Champions League titles to their name, Liverpool are the third most successful side in the history of this competition, with only AC Milan (7) and Real Madrid (15) having won this competition more so far, as of the time of writing.
The Reds’ wins have come in 1977 (3 – 1 vs. Borussia Monchengladbach), 1978 (1 – 0 vs. Club Brugge), 1981 (1 – 0 vs. Real Madrid), 1984 (1 – 1, 4 – 2 on penalties vs. Roma), and 2005 (3 – 3, 3 – 2 on penalties vs. AC Milan), whilst the most recently Champions League Final victory was in 2019, when they beat fellow English side Spurs 2 – 0 thanks to goals that came from the likes of Mohamed Salah (2’ – Penalty), and Divock Origi (87’).
Moving on to PSV Eindhoven, they too are a club with a strong pedigree in European Football over the years, having regularly participated in the UEFA Champions League in recent times.
Dutch Giants PSV are also former European Champions, having won the title on one occasion in their illustrious history. This was when it was known as the European Cup, with them beating Portuguese heavyweights 6 – 5 on penalties in what was a tense contest that had ended in a 0 – 0 draw after extra time had been played.
The last time Liverpool were victorious over PSV in the UEFA Champions League was back on Tuesday, 9th December 2008, when the Reds were victorious with a 3 – 1 triumph in Eindhoven thanks to goals from the likes of Ryan Babel (45+2’), Albert Riera (68’), and finally, David Ngog (77’). The only goal for the Dutch club that day came from Danko Lazrović to initially take the lead towards the end of the first half (36’).
