Spurs are currently led by Danish Head Coach Thomas Frank. They will go head-to-head with Niko Kovac’s Borussia Dortmund in the league phase of the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League. This fixture for the Lilywhites will take place in the heart of North London at the iconic Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Tottenham will, of course, be looking to secure all three points against the German Giants. They are aiming to reach the knockout stages automatically via a top-eight finish, and a victory here would take them a step closer to achieving this goal.

Qualification for the latest iteration of this highly prestigious European cup competition was sealed by Spurs thanks to their 2025 UEFA Europa League Final victory, where they were able to defeat fellow Premier League outfit Manchester United 1 – 0 thanks to a winning goal from their Welsh international forward Brennan Johnson late on in the first half (42’).

Whilst they have not yet won the trophy, Tottenham have, of course, reached the Final of the Champions League, doing so back in 2019, where they faced Liverpool.

In that season, they took part in that iconic semi-final tie against Dutch club Ajax. They came into the second leg after having lost 1 – 0 at home, and goals from Matthijs de Ligt (5’) and Hakim Ziyech (35’) seemingly put the tie almost out of sight, with it now 3 – 0 on aggregate. But a famous hat-trick from Lucas Moura (55’, 59’, 90+6’), saw Tottenham win the away leg 3 – 2, with them securing passage to the final on the away goals rule.

Moving on to German Giants Borussia Dortmund, they too are a side that are no strangers to this competition. Qualification for the league phase of the BVB was confirmed following a 4th-place finish in the top flight of German football, the Bundesliga. They ended up with a total of 57 points from their 34 games.

Dortmund are former European Champions, having won the UEFA Champions League back in the 1996/97 season under the stewardship of Head Coach Ottmar Hitzfeld. They were able to beat Italian heavyweights Juventus 3 – 1 thanks to the goals of Karl-Heinz Riedle (29’, 34’) and Lars Ricken (71’). Meanwhile, the only goal for the Old Lady in that game came from the legendary forward Alessandro Del Piero midway through the second half (65’).

The last time these two clubs met in this competition was in the 2018/19 season, at the Round of 16 stage. Over a two-legged tie, Spurs won 4–0 on aggregate. The first leg at home saw them win 3 – 0 at Wembley thanks to the goals of Heung-Min Son (47’), Jan Vertonghen (83’), and Fernando Llorente (86’). The 1 – 0 victory in the second leg was sealed thanks to what was a winning goal from Harry Kane early on in the second half in Germany (48’).

Overall, Spurs have won all four games in the Champions League against Borussia Dortmund so far, and they will be hoping for another victory against these opponents this season.
