Spurs, currently led by their Danish Head Coach Thomas Frank, are going to get their 2025/26 Carabao Cup campaign underway with a third-round tie against Grant McCann’s Doncaster Rovers, who currently play their football in England’s third tier, League One. This tie is going to be played in the heart of North London at the iconic Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

If Tottenham secures victory against Doncaster, they will move a step closer to achieving their ambitions in this competition. Their goal is, of course, to reach the Final at Wembley and lift the trophy in the English Capital in March 2026.

Spurs got a bye into the third round of this season’s Carabao Cup as a result of their involvement in European Football this season, and they will be hoping to secure a crucial win on home soil as they pursue a plethora of silverware this season.

The Lilywhites are most certainly no strangers to winning this competition over the years, with them having lifted this trophy on as many as 4 occasions, doing so in 1971, 1973, 1999, and most recently in 2008, when they were able to beat fierce local rivals Chelsea 2 – 1 after extra time, thanks to goals from the likes of Dimitar Berbatov (70’ – Penalty) and Jonathan Woodgate (94’). Chelsea’s only goal of the day came from their talismanic striker Didier Drogba towards the end of the first half, giving his side the lead (39’).

Moving on to Doncaster Rovers, the League One side began this season’s Carabao Cup campaign with a First Round tie against Championship outfit Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium. Doncaster were surprise 4 – 0 winners, with them securing this historic triumph thanks to the goals of Ben Close (11’), Spurs loanee Damola Ajayi (23’), former Leeds United player Robbie Gotts (84’), and Tom Nixon, who scored his goal deep into stoppage time in the second half (90+6’).

In the second round, McCann’s side came up against League Two side Accrington Stanley away from home, with them beating their fourth-tier counterparts thanks to goals from Owen Bailey (75’) and the aforementioned Ben Close (82’), with both of their goals coming late on in the game in the second half.

Doncaster Rovers have never won the League Cup, which is currently known as the Carabao Cup due to sponsorship reasons. The furthest that the Yorkshire side have ever got in this competition is the Quarter Finals which they reached in both the 1975/76 and 2005/06 seasons, where they were beaten by Tottenham (7 – 2) and Arsenal, though the Gunners only beat Doncaster on penalties in the end.

The last time these two clubs met in this competition was on Wednesday, 26th August 2009, with the visitors, Spurs, winning 5–1. The Premier League side scored their goals through Tom Huddlestone (9’), Jamie O’Hara (11’), Peter Crouch (37’), David Bentley (52’), and Roman Pavlyuchenko (69’). The only goal for Rovers that day was scored by their midfielder, Martin Woods, who scored midway through the second half from the penalty spot (61’).

Overall, Spurs and Doncaster Rovers have met just 9 times in all competitions over the years, with Tottenham currently having the most victories with 6, compared with Doncaster’s 1 so far. There have been just 2 draws between them to date, as of the time of writing.
