Coral-Eclipse Stakes: Constitution River Heads Competitive Sandown Line-Up
The Coral-Eclipse Stakes at Sandown brings together a mix of established Group performers, improving types and a couple of likely tactical influences, with the 51st running shaping up around a strong three-year-old presence and key international form lines.
Constitution River arrives with a perfect record this season and brings the standout form into the race. The Aidan O’Brien-trained colt has extended his winning run to four, building on a dominant Dee Stakes success before landing the Prix du Jockey-Club in France. That Classic victory underlines his profile at this level, and he is expected to be the central figure in the race provided he takes his place.
Stablemate Hawk Mountain has also taken a high-level route through France and finished just behind Constitution River in the Prix du Jockey-Club. He has performed creditably in two starts this season and represents a possible second string from the same yard, with further plans including alternative Classic targets also under consideration.
Another Ballydoyle runner, Causeway, arrives unbeaten in his last five starts, including a hard-fought win in the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot. That form sits at a lower level than the principals here, but his progression remains untested at Group One level and he adds depth to the stable’s hand.
Flushing Meadows is also among the possible pace influences. After a modest season by comparison to his debut win, he was well beaten in handicap company last time and is expected to have a supporting role if taking part, with stamina over this trip not fully proven.
The four-year-old division is led by Saddadd, who has developed into a consistent Group-level performer this season. He has already taken a Group Three over this course and distance and most recently finished third in the Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh. That run confirmed his competitiveness at a higher level, and he arrives with solid recent form in stronger company.
A Boy Named Susie also brings progressive three-year-old form, having finished fourth in the Prix du Jockey-Club after racing wide and meeting traffic in the straight. Despite still seeking a first win since his debut, his pattern of improvement suggests he remains capable of stepping forward again in Group One company.
Gethin represents another lightly raced contender. He was narrowly beaten by Ombudsman over this course and distance in the Brigadier Gerard Stakes, although he received weight on that occasion. That form has since been boosted significantly by the winner, who went on to land a major Group One, giving Gethin’s profile added substance.
King’s Gambit has been supplemented into the race but arrives without a win for an extended period and on form is held by several of these. His presence is widely viewed as potentially tactical, with the possibility of helping to ensure a strong pace for other stable runners.
At the head of the older horses, Galen has shown glimpses of ability in international competition but has struggled to reproduce his best form this season. His most encouraging recent run came when fourth in the Wolferton Stakes, though he would need a significant step forward to be competitive at this level.
In summary, the race is likely to be shaped by whether Constitution River can confirm his Classic form on home soil against improving opposition such as Saddadd and Gethin, while several stable companions may influence the pace and overall shape of the contest.
