Gaelic Warrior Makes History By Dominating Punchestown Gold Cup

Punchestown Festival 2026 - Gold Cup

The star of Day Two at the Punchestown Festival was undoubtably Gaelic Warrior, who delivered a hugely impressive performance in the Punchestown Gold Cup.

He batted away the much-fancied Fact To File with ease in what was another elite-level display, reinforcing his position as the king of the staying chasers. This win came on the back of his Cheltenham Gold Cup success and confirmed he is now the horse to beat in the division.

It also marked a notable piece of history, as he achieved something Galopin Des Champs never managed by following Cheltenham Gold Cup glory with victory in the Punchestown equivalent. Paul Townend praised the performance, highlighting how tough it is to complete the Cheltenham–Punchestown double after such a hard campaign.

Le Frimeur hands Harry Derham first Grade 1

Derham described the moment as a “dream realised”, having long aspired to train at the highest level and compete against leading yards. The victory marks a major step in his rise within the training ranks and is expected to be the first of many big-race successes.

With Nolimit causes 14-1 Champion Bumper shock

Another Grade 1 surprise came in the Champion Bumper as With Nolimit defeated The Mourne Rambler to land a 14-1 shock.

Amateur rider Josh Halford was on board, having only found out he would be riding a few hours before the race. He admitted there was disbelief at getting the call-up but said he was excited to take the ride. Gordon Elliott praised Halford’s work at Cullentra and highlighted how well he has fitted into the team.

Raise You Up leads O’Sullivan 1–2 in Auction Hurdle Final

The yard also filled second place with De Jour En Jour, completing a memorable finish for the stable.

It marked a second Punchestown winner of the week for Harrington, continuing her strong record across both Flat and jumps campaigns.

Jockeys take part in charity sprint

Away from the racing, jockeys swapped saddles for running shoes in a sprint that raised funds for charity.

Ricky Doyle came out quickest on the day, in a light-hearted contest at Punchestown.

Wednesday verdict

While there were several notable winners and shocks across the card, Day Two ultimately belonged to Gaelic Warrior.

His dominant Punchestown Gold Cup victory confirmed him as the standout staying chaser in the sport, with the added achievement of backing up Cheltenham success in emphatic fashion. He is a true modern-day icon of the sport.
