Cheltenham Festival will once again descend on Cheltenham Racecourse in 2021. The annual meeting is one of the highlights of the racing calendar. Cheltenham Festival History
The first race of the Cheltenham Festival known as “The National Hunt Chase” took place in 1860 in Market Harborough. Originally Cheltenham Festival races were held in a variety of different locations. Warwick Racecourse was amongst the most popular location before the early 1900’s. The official move to Prestbury Park was in 1911. Prestbury Park have played host to the Cheltenham Festival each year ever since.
The oldest most renowned race at Cheltenham Festival is undoubtedly the Stayer’s Hurdle. First ran in 1912 the championship race is a highlight of the meeting.
There have been many triumphant wins over the years and history has certainly been made. A memorable win in history dates back to 1987 which saw the first female jockey win a race. 21 year old Gee Armytage made a remarkable stamp in history inspiring many.
After 2005, came the introduction of a four day festival instead of three. This change meant a championship race could be held on each day. Which gave more racing enthusiasts a reason to celebrate. Champion Day kicks off the Cheltenham Festival on 16/03/19. Presented by Magners this day looks to set off the Cheltenham Festival in true style.
