His solo career began in 1964 with the release of ‘Chills and Fever’, which unfortunately for Jones did not chart. However, success was not far away for him, as his 1965 single ‘It’s Not Unusual’ became a massive international hit after it was promoted by the pirate radio station ‘Radio Caroline’.

Fast forward to 1987, Tom Jones had a hit with ‘A Boy from Nowhere, which went on to chart at number two in the United Kingdom. In 1991 he performed at the famous Glastonbury Festival that year. Then in 1993, he released the album ‘The Lead and How to Swing It’, and the first single, ‘If I Only Knew’, went up to 11th place in the UK Charts, and he performed this song at the 1994 MTV Europe Music Awards. In that same year, he was awarded an OBE.
‘Reload’ proved incredibly popular, climbing to number one on the UK Chart, whilst also selling more than 4 million copies worldwide. ‘Sex Bomb’ was released as a single shortly after that, and it proved to be the most popular single on the album, with it achieving a spot in third on the UK Singles Chart.
In 2003, a year after the release of his album ‘Mr Jones’, Tom Jones was the recipient of the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music. Then in 2004, Jones performed alongside the Pussycat Dolls and Carmen Electra in a performance of ‘You Can Leave Your Hat On’ in what was the seventh annual Vh1 Divas Concert.
Jones was the only male singer in a line-up that also included the likes of Patti LaBelle, Gladys Knight, and Debbie Harry.
To mark what was his 65th Birthday, he performed a concert in Ynysangharad Park, which was his first performance in Pontypridd since 1964 on 28th May 2005. Then in 2006, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.
In May 2012, his album ‘Spirit in the Room’ had covers of songs that had been originally written by the likes of Paul McCartney, Paul Simon, Richard and Linda Thompson, Blind Willie Johnson, Tom Waits, and the Low Anthem.
