Liverpool defeated Chelsea in a classic goalless Carabao Cup Final under the famous Wembley Arch. It was one of the most dramatic League Cup finals in recent history, with the Reds recording an 11-10 penalty shootout victory.

Jurgen Klopp’s side advanced to the Carabao Cup final after beating Arsenal 2-0 on aggregate. While Chelsea booked their spot in the League Cup final after defeating Spurs 1-0 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to make it 3-0 on aggregate.

The all-German managerial EFL Cup final took place in front of sell-out crowds at Wembley, and while Thomas Tuchel was hoping to add to last season’s Champions League success, it seemed that it wasn’t meant to be for the Blues.

Chelsea could have had several goals within 90 minutes of the match. Mason Mount had two near chances on either side of half-time, while Kai Havertz and Romelu Lukaku had their efforts overruled for being offside.

Liverpool also missed a chance in the second half after Joël Matip’s goal was disallowed by VAR for being offside. Mohammed Salah nearly got on the scoresheet after forcing Chelsea keeper Edouard Mendy to make a fine save. Mendy delivered an outstanding performance at the home of England football, producing a remarkable double save to keep the Chelsea vs Liverpool score level in the first half.

Although Liverpool walked away with the first domestic trophy of the season, FA Cup and Champions League silverware is still within reach for Chelsea. For Jurgen Klopp’s side, it’s one down three to go as Liverpool seeks the elusive quadruple: Premier League, Carabao Cup, FA Cup and Champions League victories.

Wembley Stadium is the second-largest stadium in Europe and the standard playing venue of the English national team. It also hosts the annual Carabao Cup final and the Community Shield.

Wembley Stadium History:

On the 19th of May Wembley Stadium officially opened its doors with the FA Cup final between Chelsea and Manchester United (1-0) in 2007. However, earlier other official football matches have were played, of which a match against the English and Italian U21 sides. The stadium has also hosted the 2011 Champions League final between Barcelona and Manchester United (3-1), and the 2013 Champions League final two years later, between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund (2-1). Wembley Stadium is known for having its iconic sliding roof that sits 52 metres above the pitch. Although the roof doesn’t completely close, it covers every seat in the stadium, thus making Wembley the largest fully covered stadium in the world.
