2023 Royal Ascot: What you need to know about Wednesday’s trial day

The Trials Day could provide an insight into who could be amongst the standout performers at the Royal Ascot in June

2023 Royal Ascot is within touching distance. The action is set to get underway at the Ascot Racecourse on Tuesday 20th June with the 5 days of intense and enthralling racing coming to an end on Saturday 24th June 2023.

This trial day is in very close proximity to the event itself, therefore this could give fans a very good indication of who the potential race winners may be. A win in a trial day will give hope of a race victory at Ascot, whilst defeat brings with it a touch of anxiety, does not end hopes of a victory at Ascot.

As mentioned, successful trial days provide you with optimism that you can win a race at Royal Ascot, and this has certainly be the case over the years. For example, after victory in the Two Year Old Conditions Stakes at a trial day, Chipotle went on to win the 2021 Windsor Castle Stakes ahead of Dig Two (2nd) and Bonnie (3rd).

This was also the case for Estimate, owned by the late Queen Elizabeth II, emerged victorious in the 2012 Queens Vase with the Sagaro Stakes and Gold Cup also being won at Ascot in 2013. Estimate’s 2013 Gold Cup win was trainer Sir Michael Stoute’s second, with his first victory coming all the way back in 1978 with Shangamuzo.

There are 7 races set to take place over the course of the trial day, and below is the full list of horses that are set to take part:

There are certainly some horses that stand out from the rest in this list, and one of them is Bradsell. The horse, trained by Archie Watson, won the Coventry Stakes ahead of competition from Persian Force and Royal Scotsman.

Trueshan is also another standout, having won the last two Qipco British Champions Long Distance cups, both in 2021 and 2022.

Coltrane, trained by Andrew Balding, is another horse to keep your eye on in this trial day and at Ascot in June. Only Trueshan finished ahead of Coltrane in the 2022 British Champions Long Distance Cup, this followed victory in the 2022 Ascot Stakes, where the closest competition, Bring On The Night and Arcadian Sunrise, had to settle for 2nd and 3rd respectively.

With the Royal Ascot just weeks away, excitement and anticipation is building for what is set to be an enthralling five days of world class horse racing once again.
