Royal Ascot 2024: Review

This year’s racing at Royal Ascot was enthralling, and here we will be reviewing all five days of action at the iconic and historic Ascot Racecourse.

The 2024 edition of Royal Ascot finished on Saturday 22nd June, which brought five days of enthralling racing at the iconic and historic Ascot Racecourse to an end. 7 races on each day meant that a total of 35 races took to the track, and here we will be reviewing all the action.

We will start this review with the first day, which took place back on Tuesday 18th June 2024. The Queen Anne Stakes kicked off the racing, and it was the pre-race favourite Charyn, ridden by Silvestre De Sousa, who took home the win, fending off the competition that came from runner-up Docklands and Maljoom in third place.

Charyn was one of the very few favourites to feature in the top three in races on the opening day. After Rashabar won the Coventry Stakes, it was to be Asfoora who would win the King Charles III Stakes, with the favourite, Big Evs, having to settle for a third place finish in the end.

Sean Levey was then successful in the following race, the 2024 St James’s Palace Stakes, riding Rosallion to victory ahead of the likes of Henry Longfellow and Metropolitan in second and third place respectively.

The Ascot Stakes came next, and the winner of this year’s renewal of this race was won by Luke Morris and Pledgeofallegiance, who finished ahead of Divine Comedy, Kyle Of Lochalsh, and Get Shirty, who filled the other spots in the top four at the end of that race.

Israr won the Wolfreton Stakes, whilst it was William Buick’s Belloccio, trained by Willie Mullins, who won the Copper Horse Handicap, which was the final race to take place on Day One.

Day Two then got underway with the 2024 edition of the Queen Mary Stakes, where Leovanni, ridden by Jockey James Doyle came out on top ahead of Mighty Eriu and Maw Lam in second and third. The pre-race favourite, Kassaya, had to settle for a 12th place finish in the end.

The pre-race favourite for this year’s Queen’s Vase had more success, with Ryan Moore’s Illinois winning the race ahead of runner-up Highbury and Shane Foley’s Birdman in third place. Running Lion, ridden by Oisin Murphy then won the Duke Of Cambridge Stakes.

The favourite would come out on top again in the race that followed, which was the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes. It was another win for Ryan Moore and Aidan O’Brien, with Auguste Rodin finishing ahead of the likes of runner-up Zarakem and third place Horizon Dore.

Another win then came for Oisin Murphy in the Royal Hunt Cup, with the jockey able to lead Wild Tiger to victory, with Crack Shot, the favourite for the race coming in 17th place in the end.

The Kensington Palace Stakes was the penultimate race to take place on Day Two, and it was Hector Crouch’s Doha who came away victorious. Then, Ain’t Nobody, was able to win the 2024 Windsor Castle Stakes, which was the race that closed the action for the day.

Then, Day Three, better known as Ladies’ Day, took place on Thursday 20th June 2024 – a day synonymous with the ever-iconic Ascot Gold Cup. The first race to take place was the Norfolk Stakes, which were won by Shareholder with favourite Whistlejacket coming in 4thplace in the end.

Following victories for Rossa Ryan’s Going The Distance and Ryan Moore’s Port Fairy in the King George V Stakes and the Ribblesdale Stakes respectively, the 2024 edition of the famous Ascot Gold Cup took place.

This year, it was the pre-race favourite Kyprios, ridden by Ryan Moore, who was able to emerge with the highly coveted Ascot Gold Cup, after an enthralling race saw Moore fend off some stern competition from the likes of Trawlerman and Sweet William, who had to settle for a second and third place finish in the end.

This was Kyprios’ second victory in this race, with the first coming two years earlier in 2022. As for Ryan Moore, the 2024 Gold Cup victory is the fourth of his career to date, including that Kyprios win in 2022, as well as Order of St George’s win in 2016 and his victory with Queen Elizabeth II’s Estimate back in 2013.

Callum Rodriguez’s Mickley and Sean Levey’s Jayarebe won the next two races, the Britannia Stakes and the Hampton Court Stakes, before the action on day three concluded with the 2024 Buckingham Palace Stakes.

Pre-race favourite, James Doyle’s English Oak, came away with the win following a race that saw him finish ahead of Billyjoh, Carrytheone, and Mostabshir, who filled the final three spots in the top four.

The fourth and penultimate action on Friday 21st June 2024 began with pre-race favourite Fairy Godmother, ridden by Ryan Moore, winning the Albany Stakes. This was followed by another favourite winning the next race, with Tom Eaves and Insherin winning the 2024 Commonwealth Cup.

Tom Marquand and Porta Fortuna then won the Coronation Stakes before Crystal Black came out on top in the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes. Favourites Ramatuelle and Ethical Diamond came 3rd and 4th in these two races respectively.

The final three races of the day also saw no pre-race favourites securing wins. In the Sandringham Stakes, Soprano and Jockey Billy Loughnane came away with the win, whilst it was Stephane Pasquier’s Calandagan who won the 2024 King Edward Stakes.

Joe Fanning and Pilgrim then rounded off the action on day four with a win in the latest running of the Palace Of Holyrood House Stakes.

The fifth and final day of action at Royal Ascot 2024 took place back on Saturday 22nd June 2024.

The Chesham Stakes was the first race to take place on Saturday, and it was yet another victory for Ryan Moore and Trainer Aidan O’Brien, with the pre-race favourite Bedtime Story emerging victorious ahead of Tom Marquand’s Pentle Bay and Liam Keniry’s Brian in second and third.

Isle Of Jura then won the Hardwicke Stakes before history was made by Khaadem in the 2024 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes. Khaadem managed to become the first horse since 1959 to win this race back to back, and a first ever win for an eight year old in this race.

Then came the Jersey Stakes, where Kikkuli and Chicago Critic finished behind race winner Haatem. The Wokingham Stakes then followed, and it saw the pre-race favourite finish second and denied the win by Tom Marquand’s Unequal Love in the end.

Both of the final two races of Royal Ascot 2024 were won by the pre-race favourites. Starting with the Golden Gates Stakes, William Buick’s Hand Of God was the winner, with Cambridge and Black Run coming in second and third place.

Dylan Browne McMonagle’s Uxmal was then the winner of the final race at Royal Ascot this year, the 2024 Queen Alexandra Stakes. Run For Oscar was the runner-up, whilst it was Dawn Rising who came in third.
