Sex. Violence. Other?’, 2007’s ‘Pull The Pin’, 2015’s ‘Keep the Village Alive’, 2019’s ‘Kind’, and most recently ‘Oochya!’, which was released to the world back in 2022.
Their 8 UK number one albums puts them level with the likes of Oasis, Led Zeppelin, R.E.M, The Killers, and Westlife. They also have more than the likes of Ed Sheeran (7), Elton John (7), George Michael (7), Blur (7), Paul McCartney (7), Pink Floyd (6) and The Script (6).
Stereophonics were founded all the way back in 1992, and the current members of the band are Kelly Jones (Lead Vocals, Lead Guitar, Keyboards), Richard Jones (Bass Guitar, Harmonica, Backing Vocals), Adam Zindani (Rhythm Guitar, Backing Vocals), and Jamie Morrison (Drums, Percussion). Kelly and Richard Jones were among the three founding members, whilst the original drummer Stuart Cable unfortunately passed away in 2010.
After originally being named ‘Zephyr’ and ‘Tragic Love Company’, the band finally changed the name to ‘Stereophonics’ in the mid-1990s. This name was adopted after they signed with the V2 Record Label in May 1996. On 25th November 1996, Stereophonics released their debut single ‘Looks Like Chaplin’.
A debut album was released barely more than a year later in August 1997, which went by the name of ‘Word Gets Around’, which went gold in Britain in 1998. In the UK, it reached number 6, whilst in New Zealand it ranked as high as 8 in the charts.
Their hit song ‘Local Boy in the Photograph’ was released back in February 1998, and it reached number 14 in the United Kingdom’s Singles Chart, whilst it got to number 2 in the UK Indie Chart. In the same week as its release, Stereophonics were given a prestigious BRIT Award for the Best British Breakthrough Act.
‘The Bartender and the Thief’, released back in November 1998, and it reached as high as number 3 in the UK Singles Charts, and it was a song that featured prominently on their next studio album ‘Performance and Cocktails’, which was released on 8th March 1999. It was their first studio album to reach number one in the UK.
‘Just Enough Education to Perform’ was released in April 2001, and included two of their most iconic songs, one of which was ‘Mr Writer’, which reached number five in the United Kingdom. The other was ‘Have A Nice Day’ which also got to number five in the UK Singles Charts. The album itself reached number one.
This album had been promoted with a two day music festival, with them performing at Donington Park on the first day before taking to the stage at the Millennium Stadium on day two.
Album four ‘You Gotta Go There to Come Back’ came out in 2003, and it included ‘Maybe Tomorrow’, another one of the band’s most iconic singles.
The song ‘Dakota’ formed part of their ‘Language. Sex. Violence. Other?’ studio album released in March 2005. A few months later on 2nd July 2005, Stereophonics performed at the Live 8 Concert at the famous Hyde Park in London.
‘Pull The Pin’ is their sixth Studio Album which was released to the world on 15th October 2007, including songs such as ‘It Means Nothing’, ‘My Friends’, ‘Bank Holiday Monday’, and ‘I Could Lose Ya’. The album did get to number one in the UK.
It was two years after the release of ‘Pull The Pin’ that the band released a brand new album, which was named ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’. It came out on 16th November 2009 and included songs such as ‘Innocent’, ‘Could You Be The One’, ‘Uppercut’ and ‘Show Me How’. The album itself peaked at number 11 in the UK.
Graffiti on the Train was released on 4th March 2013, and it was Stereophonics’ 8th Studio Album, and it was notable for including some of their most famous songs – ‘Violins and Tambourines’, ‘In A Moment’, and ‘Indian Summer’. The album was a big success in the UK – peaking at number 3 in the Albums Chart, number 2 in the UK Download Chart, and at number 1 in the United Kingdom’s Indie Albums Chart.
Album number 9 ‘Keep the Village Alive’ came along on 11th March 2015, with their hit single C’est la Vie amongst the songs featured on it. C’est la Vie was certified Gold and peaked at 3rd in the UK Indie Chart.
The 20th anniversary of their debut album ‘Word Gets Around’ was celebrated by the release of their 10th studio album ‘Scream Above the Sounds’, which was released back on 27th October 2017. ‘All In One Night’ was the leading single, with ‘Caught By The Wind’, ‘Before Anyone Knew Our Name’, and ‘What’s All the Fuss About’.
Kind, an album released on 25th October 2019, was their eleventh, coming out two years after their previous one. Tracks included ‘Fly Like an Eagle’, ‘Stitches’, ‘Street of Orange Light, ‘Hungover for You’, ‘Don’t Let the Devil Take Another Day’, and ‘Restless Mind’. It was also their seventh album to reach the number one spot in the UK.
Just a couple of years later, Stereophonics’ twelfth and most recent studio album ‘Oochya!’ was released on 6th September 2021. Singles included ‘Hanging on Your Hinges’, ‘Do Ya Feel My Love?’, ‘Forever’, ‘Right Place Right Time’, and ‘When You See It’. The album also reached number 1 in the United Kingdom’s Album Chart.
