Kyprios Ascot Gold Cup

Kyprios favourite for Ascot Gold Cup

Kyprios is no stranger to success in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot, as is trainer Aidan O’Brien, and in 2024 his horse is seen as the leading contender to win this race for the second time in three years.

Royal Ascot is full of incredible history, and its headline race, the Ascot Gold Cup, is most certainly no exception with many memorable moments over the years. Not only have there been a plethora of memorable moments, but some of the most successful horses, jockeys, and trainers have graced the illustrious Ascot Racecourse over the years.

The iconic Yeats is the horse with the most wins in the Ascot Gold Cup to date with 4. What makes this achievement even more astounding is that this was achieved in four consecutive renewals of this race from 2006 to 2009. The aforementioned Aidan O’Brien was the trainer for all of Yeats’ wins in this race.

O’Brien also happens to be the trainer with the most wins in this race as of the time of writing with no less than 8 to his name so far. After wins in 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009 with Yeats, he had further success in this race with Fame and Glory (2011), Leading Light (2014), Order of St. George (2016), and the previously mentioned Kyprios in 2022.

Speaking of Kyprios, this horse happens to be the current favourite to take home the Ascot Gold Cup in the 2024 iteration of this highly prestigious and historic race, with the aim of making it 2 wins in 3 years.

Rewinding to 2022, it was an enthralling and tense race that saw Kyprios win this race for the first time on that occasion. Once Ryan Moore had taken the lead from Princess Zoe, Kyprios was then soon facing stern competition from the likes of Mojo Star and three-time winner Stradivarius.

To the relief of trainer O’Brien, Jockey Moore managed to lead Kypiros to a win by a margin of just half a length over runner-up Mojo Star. Meanwhile, Stradivarius had to settle for a third place finish in the end.

If Kyprios does win a second Ascot Gold Cup, this will bring him level with the likes of Anticipation (1816, 1819), Bizarre (1824, 1825), The Emperor (1844, 1845), The Hero (1847, 1848), Fisherman (1858, 1859), Isonomy (1879, 1880), The White Knight (1907, 1908), Prince Palatine (1912, 1913), Invershin (1928, 1929), Timdon (1931, 1932), Fighting Charlie (1965, 1966), Le Moss (1979, 1980), Ardross (1981, 1982), Gildoran (1984, 1985), Sadeem (1988, 1989), Drum Taps (1992, 1993), Kayf Tara (1998, 2000) and Royal Rebel, who won in both 2001 and then a year later in 2002.

Back to Kyprios, he has not yet run in 2024, with the most recent race being in the QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup at Ascot Racecourse on Saturday 21st October 2023. Whilst being the favourite, he was unable to emerge victorious, settling for what was a second place finish in the end, with Frankie Dettori’s Trawlerman taking first place in this race.

Kyprios had also come in second in the race before that, the Comer Group International Irish St. Leger and Curragh Racecourse on 10th September 2022.

Outside of Kyprios, there are a few other horses that are seen as to also have a great chance of coming out on top in this year’s Gold Cup Race at Ascot. 2023 winner Courage Mon Ami is the next most favoured horse, with Vauban, Tower of London, Continuous, and Desert Hero also seen as being seen as firmly in the running for glory this year.

Whilst Kyprios is seen as the favourite for now, unpredictability comes hand in hand with sport, including the incredibly competitive nature of horse racing.

With the 2024 renewal of the iconic and illustrious Royal Ascot underway in a matter of weeks at Ascot Racecourse, excitement, and anticipation are certainly on the rise amongst horse racing fans.
