🏗️ Origin & Construction

• Built specifically for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the stadium had a peak capacity of 80,000 spectators during the events

• Constructed between 2008 and 2011 at a cost of approximately £500 million, the build featured the longest cantilevered roof in the world

🏟️ Transformation for Football

• After the Games, it was refitted from 2013–15 and downsized to around 66,000 seats, then further limited to 60,000 matchday capacity under West Ham’s tenancy terms

• West Ham United became anchor tenants in March 2013 and moved in for the 2016–17 season, playing their first fixture—a 3–0 Europa League win—on 4 August 2016 against NK Domžale

• The club is currently licensed for 62,500 seats, although the stadium can accommodate up to 68,013 when fully utilised

• West Ham aims to unlock the unused 5,500 seats and officially expand capacity to 68,000 by the 2026–27 season

• The stadium has UEFA Category Four status and boasts 35 catering outlets, 428 wheelchair spaces, plus 3,600 capacity in hospitality lounges and executive boxes.

• Environmentally, a major retrofit installed 6,500 m² of solar panels on its roof, generating about 850,000 kWh/year, reducing emissions by 200 t and saving around £350,000 annually in energy costs.

• Located in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Stratford (E20), it benefits from excellent transport links: Stratford (Central/Jubilee/Overground/Elizabeth Line), Pudding Mill Lane DLR, Hackney Wick Overground, plus numerous bus routes (e.g. 388, 309, 339, D8)

🏅 Noteworthy Events & Attendance

• Record attendance stands at 62,478, achieved during a Premier League match against Leeds in May 2023; a similar figure was recorded versus Liverpool in December 2024

• Besides football, the stadium has hosted athletics (IAAF Diamond League), international rugby, elite concerts, and was even converted for Major League Baseball events—transformations that have involved laying over 144,000 sq ft of artificial turf and substantial structural changes
